Default component date codes vs engine assembly date

I am looking for the following components to complete my 69 Z/28. car build date is 03E (5th week of march 69), engine assembly date is 0218 (feb 18th 69) block casting is B109 (Feb 10 69). from what i understand, i need parts dated before the engine assembly date right? does it matter how long before the engine assembly date the engine compenents are dated?? or just as long as they are before.

1100837 alternator dated before 9B18
1111489 distributer dated before 9B18
1108367 starter dated before 9B18
nos 3953692 or 3937170 water pump dated before B189

thanks! tommy

Tommy,

Not necessarily! "Most" components associated with the actual running of the engine were attached at the Engine plant (Flint, Tonowanda, etc...) However, things like alternators, starters, pulleys, belts, hoses, spark plugs, carbs, etc... were attached at the assembly plant (Norwood or Van Nuys/LA). So your distributor and H2O pump should be a few days to a few weeks prior to the ENGINE assembly date. The alternator and starter should be a few days to a few weeks prior to the CAR assembly date. (LA built cars might be even earlier than that as they didn't have quick access to the parts like Norwood cars did.)

I believe you need a 1111480 distributor for the 302 z28 not a 489 unit..

good luck, Bill.

Chiming in here; my 69 Camaro is a VN car with an 02B trim tag. The complete engine still resides! The dates are from 3rd week Dec/68 to 2nd week Feb/69. VN cars may differ I would guess on the demand of the orders placed to fulfill.
Hope that helps!
