Default side view mirror resto

I have the original side view mirror off my BB Nova, that is is in perfect shape except for the chrome being weathered. it is not pitted at all and the orig dated glass is perfect. Can anybody restore/rechrome these pieces with out breaking the glass.??? don't want to use the cheapo mirror with the bowtie on it. Thanks as always SULLY

I have had the same problem when restoring remote mirrors for 68's.The adheisive is some pretty tough stuff.I have found nothing to remove it with any success.I have used solvents,thinners,heat,and even boiled it.Nothing short of a hammer will remove it.Bad news for a correctly dated mirror glass.I use Paragon to supply new date coded mirror glass after I replate them.I have done several,but they MUST come apart to be plated.I know they carry the Oval glass for 68 and up,not sure about 67 though.They should have it........

68l30,
Could you please say more about "Paragon".
I've never heard of this before.
I bought a pitted mirror at a swap meet just for the date coded glass!
(glad it was cheap )
Thanks in advance.

JRSully,

I posted a reply over and the Nova site, but for the rest of you here is some info. The 70 Nova round non bowtie mirror used a snap ring to hold the glass in. Later years switched to the glue in mirror. The Bowtie mirror is reproduced with the snap ring. I do not think that the Bowtiew round mirror is reproduced with the snap ring. I can get them made though.

68z302;
Here is the link to Paragon Corvette the corvette guys are ahead of the curve with many of the detail items.

This was a post from last year on the Camaro Research Group forum, hope this helps:

Mirror Disassembly Made Easy

Posted By: jeff68 <[email protected]>
Date: 5-June-02, 17:11

I recently disassembled the standard LH mirror on my 68 to replace the glass and have the components re-chromed. I had heard that the only way to remove the glass was to either break it (which I couldn't bring myself to do on an original date coded mirror)or try boiling it in water which often results in breakage. Here's what I did: I held the assembly in a soft-jawed vise with the glass facing up. I then filled the 'cup' formed by the mirror head with laquer thinner, covered it to prevent evaporation, and let it sit for 12 hours. When I came back, the mirror lifted right out. I then removed the base from the head by applying a light,even heat with the propane torch to the top of the base. This breaks down the retaining compound used to hold the ball part of the ball joint into the base. If you pull straight out on the ball/head assembly after sufficiently heated, it will come right out.

I didn't find any info of this type already posted, so I thought everybody might be interested.
