i have looked all over my 02 ss and cannot find where they stamped the engine and trans with the vin number.anyone know where or if they did?

The trucks have the same basic engine design and they are stamped on the deck surface behind the driver side head. The transmission is stamped just back of that and you probably wouldn't be able to see it in the truck without a mirror. The cars may be the same.
