IS THIS A JL8?
Im hoping someone can help me ID this 12 bolt. It has a tapered tube housing. The only book I have is to decode the ratio on the tube, the only problem is that it has no numbers. I cant tell if the housing was sanded one time to paint it. The lower # on the first pic reads 67890. The axle flange has a XC on it . Any help would be greatly appreciated.I will try to post a few pix to help with the ID.Thanx in advance, Bob

From picture 2, it looks like the end of the axle tube has the taper to it which would be the JL8. It has the correct JL8 parking brake bracket welded on as well, but that could have been added. My car is at the shop so I can't compare the rest of the pictures. Did you try cleaning off the paint to see if the rear code was filled in? That seems very odd that someone would have gone through the trouble to fill it in or sand off the code. Even the HD service package rears had codes on them. But picture 1 looks like the date is D 25 2 which would decode as 1972 and they only made them in 69. I'll look around for more information, but it looks like someone converted a 72 rear to discs with JL8 parts. Look around for as many casting numbers and stampings as you can find.

The axels are correct J-L8, the taper to the rear of the flange is to clear the parking brake shoes. The hub is also diffrent to mate up to the rotor and the studs are longer to go trough the extra material on the rotors. Also the welds look factory on the parking brake cable brackets.

Is the D252 the casting date or a control code? It sure looks like a real JL8 rear but that date code doesn't make sense.

I agree with Jeff H. It looks like a converted '72 rear. The axles look correct- mine has 7206 and WY on the flange. It also looks to have a left and a right side caliper bracket (5977 & 5776). The JL8 used two right brackets (5977).

Looking at pic #1, you can see the main cap has a TAB that comes out from the side. GM started doing this around 1972 as to add strangth to the rear.I feel that the rear could be a counter replacement."MOF"
