Well in reality neither of these tags is a big threat. The Gold/deluxe tag is kinda not worth much, and is harmless. It would be a harmless addition to a nice car that was done in that combo, but wouldnt add very much to the value of the car.The X code tag could lead to headaches, but there is a lot of work involved between slapping that tag on a base model and actually having a copo car with anywhere near all the correct parts.Another issue is the fact that if anybody ever tried to make a copo car out of it,there is a good chance they would be bagged by a collector that would pick up on the fact that maybe the Sequence number of the VIN was too high or low to match the build date of the car.It wouldnt stop such a car from turning up in any of the many brokers that are out there.
We went into a long discussion about rebodies and such, and I think everybody knows where I stand. If a car were all or mostly legit, but the actual body whell were damaged beyond all possiblity of repair, then maybe just changing the body shell and retaining all the other parts would be OK to me as long as it was well documented and any future owner were made aware, but building a car from the Trim plate up is wrong in my book.
Right now I am swapping out the sub frame in my "plain Jane" 1973 pontiac firebird race car since the original was bent,as well as doing what is pretty much a frame off resto, and I am documenting it with a zillion pictures and even copied the title of the donor car as well as photos of the disassembly of that car{I used many other parts of it too},incase any numbers issue turn up in the future.I would expect at least as much out of any big money collector car restorer.
