Default 1967 COPO?

A friend of mine was at a Flint car show this weekend and happened upon a '67 Impala convertible (I don't recall if it was an SS 427 or not) that had the L72 engine. Now, I know this engine was not available this year (for some reason), but that would explain the COPO-ness of it all. But then he told me it had an automatic tranny. I'd be liable to think that no automatic would have been available as a COPO till '68, as per the few L78 Novas made. I believe an original owner car too. Anyone know this car and can shed light on it?
