I seem to remember seeing a real one and a replica on their website. The new promo for the upcoming Muscle Car season features a Z16 smoking the RR tire. And that is correct. My brother had a yellow one, damn I loved that car, but to this day I can't get over the fact that GM did not put a posi-traction rear end in those cars. I know they were 'late in the model year', first time for the rat motor in an intermediate size car, but I've always wondered what the real trivia is behind that insane decision.
![]() And BTW, if I not mistaken that was the exact same motor that was rated at 425HP in the vette. Sorry, I forgot what the hell I was talking about watching two guys bid over a million bucks for some car. ![]() |

I think I read somewhere that they made Z16s with open diffs to keep costs down because they were basically promotional cars designed to warm buyers up for the '66 SS 396.

That was most certainly a Clone that just went across their block for 40K.
The Z16 Chevelle used a Hydraulic cam engine, rated 375HP @ 5600RPM. The Vette had the solid lifter cam version of this engine rated 425HP @ 6400 RPM. The Z16 used a rigid frame, stiff springs,& reinforced 4 link suspension,w/stabilizer bar helped make it possible to put down two equal black patches under hard acceleration using a 3:31 open.A car definitely ahead of it's time! ![]() |

I'm curious if this was the Pennington's re-creation? if so, that was a nice car that I would have been proud to own myself.

I've seen one authentic 65 Z-16 sell about five years ago for $74,000. I know where one is at that was bought in 1974 for three hundred dollars without the engine. The car now has an 1968 396 375hp engine in it. I've driven the car about 10 times over the last fifteen years and love it every time. The car is NOT FOR SALE.

The Black/Black car was definitely a clone and clearly represented as just that, nice guy, seemed very sincere to make sure car was not confused to be authentic. The car was parked back to back for 3 days with a Shelby I sold there, so I heard "all" the comments. WOW, I never knew the world was so full of Z-16 experts. Great entertainment!

I dont claim to be an expert on the Z-16. I have information from about ten magazine articles over the last ten years. The information on this site is correct with everything I've read in the past. I would like to find someone who knows where any possible original parts could be found. Who knows where the ones that are left are at.
