Default 69 Camaro front coil springs HY ??

I was taking my car apart for a front end rebuild and I noticed that the tag on the coil spring said HY part number 3955707. I have checked the parts books and they do not list a HY sring?Anyone have any info. on these springs? They are the original spings and I would like to put the right ones back in it.My car is a 09 D 1968.

Thanks Doug

Are you sure about that suffix?
I show a YH Part#3955721 as a front coil spring 1969 Camaro-Nova.Or even maybe it's HK or EY on your Camaro?

I show Coil spring #3955707 as being code suffix EA for 1969 Camaro w/L34,L35,L78 over 304 Ft. end lbs.

ZL-1 H.O.;

The 1970 P&A shows 3955707 as:
1966 Chevelle (S.S.) w/H.D. Susp. (2nd design) (max. load 2718 lbs.) I need to double-check this. It might be a typo.

Which is interesting since 3955707 is a 1970 AMA Specifications spring for the at least the Nova. Are you sure that your car was not a late 69 built car instead of 68? The 1969 Camaros ran over into normal 1970 production dates. They started using the 1970 paint colors on the late 1969 Camaros where the colors were similar.

The late build cars might have received updated components. This might be especially true of springs. In 1969 and 1970 they were computer selected based on the options on the car.

So if you car is a late 1969 built Camaro (09D 1969) then it is possible that you got a 1970 model spring. If you car is a 1968 built Camaro (1968 09D) then I would suspect a spring swap with a Nova.

Do me a favor and used one of the 1969 Camaro Spring Calculators found on my web site. Let me know what spring it selected for you.

Thanks,
Greg

That page lists it as EA. I'm a Nova guy, so I did not have that on my spring list.

I would still like to know if the car was a early 09D or late 09D.

Now this looks clearer. It looks like they changed the Assembly code for the same part number. That is why I asked Doug to try the spring calculator. It uses the table on page 7-65. I only published the Nova springs on my site.

BTW they figured that these calculations were to difficult. So in 1970 the service springs were greatly reduced for the Nova. Also the later parts books eliminate spring numbers and add letters to other part numbers. On springs you have to use the closest parts book to the year of manufacture.

Greg
Oh yeah 3955707 was the one listed for a 66 Chevelle. Se page 7-15 last line.

Greg, I am sure it is a early car due to the vin number which equal a 09 D 1968.I am the second owner of the car and the previous owner did very little to the car but drive it.I have the ID tags and they are definitly a HY code with the 3955707 tag.
I did your calculater and it was 302 with the HA coil sring code. I also did the calculater in Ricks and it read 306 with a HB or a EA code. The HB is listed for a conv.and EA is for a L-35 etc.
My car is a L-35 convertible and like I said it was a one owner car with most of the parts never removed. One of the front springs was broke when I removed it.

ZL-1 H.O. #?:

EA was also used on the 3955707. So the code might have switched earlier. Any chance of getting a straight on high resolution picture or scan of the tag?

Thanks,
Greg

Greg, I sent you a photo of the coil sprig tag. Let me know if that is how you wanted it ??I checked for paint dab but the springs are pretty rusty. What color dab should be on them and where? So I guess I would have to go with a EA sping?????

Thanks Doug

Yep use the EA spring. It should be the same specs.

I have not seen a paint daub on a spring yet. I know it was does on some years.

It is hard to get a clear close up. I think I can work with the picture.

Thanks,
Greg
