Default El Cheapo SUV

I know its not a supercar but my 16 year old is looking for a cheap 4 door suv such as an explorer or blazer, hoping somebody here might have something to save me from hunting around for a decent one from an unknown...

Sam, how el cheapo did you have in mind??? I have lots of contacts with the auto dealers in NY and maybe can help locate a high mileage trade destined for the wholesale lot..

Let me know and I would be happy to help.

I would recommend a used 4Runner if looking for el cheapo. I got my 88 4Runner down in Toms River last year for $2000. Burns no oil, original clutch at 146K miles, original AC still working strong, SR5 loaded with options and the top comes off for summer cruising conv style! The Toyotas tend to be more reliable as a used vehicle.

4 Runners are good trucks. I have sold at least 10 with over 200,000 miles. New engines are $1250. Stick with a 22RE 4 cylinder and you will have no engine problems. The V6s burn valves at 160-180K and will start knocking shortly after a valve job.

Ill tell you, back in 81 I bought a brand new Toyota 4 wheel pickup, the thing ran incredible and was a great beach cruiser as it was really light, Problem I had with it was while wheeling in the woods I hit a tree and the thing crumbled like tin foil, I ordered new fenders and hood and I will bet they didnt weigh more than 5 lbs total....Great drive train, poor body, not something I want my kids in as I dont think their very safe...Maybe the 4 ruuners are more sturdy...Ill have to check it out...I also bought a new F150 step side heritage pickup for a coffee runner to job sites and that is built as good as chewing gum wrappers also so I wont be getting any of those either...When your kids and grandkids are involved you want nothing less than a Sherman tank

Sam look around at the little Jeep wagons..they made a bajillion of them in the 90's pretty tough rig and with the old tried and true straight six they get decent milage and just run with no hassle...I see them around up here pretty cheap especially if you dont mind a 2wd model.

Bud.

there rock solid..only downside is if the O/D trans is soft its about 2g even on the buddy deal to get it working right again..motors are the same thing they built 20 yrs ago...I see them around up here for about 2K plus or minus due to miles...problem is the rock crawler dudes have taken a likeing to them up here and buying them up and lighting the torch..

ill see if i can find the website, lists auctions for military vehicles, used to watch it for full size vans ( brother is a contractor in chicago) but they always had jeep suv's on there. most likely stripped down models but they went pretty reasonably.
