How much time should glass and body parts predate build dates in 68 Camaros. Anyone know about the Astro Ventilation windows and when they started and stopped production and if they were only in certain factories or not? Michael

When I bought my 68 Chevelle it had the original glass. The glass was all coded XX which is Feb 68. The car was assembled 4th week in May.
I know all 68 Chevelles got vent windows. I thought no Camaros got the vent windows in 68. |

The glass may not be consistent when it comes to dates. Your back glass may be 2 months older than the side glass for example.

My car was built in Van Nuys 3rd week in January 68. The doors are not original and the windshield was replaced. The 1/4 glass is dated VZ-10 (Dec 67) and the rear glass is dated NX-10 (Jan 68). I found another 01C car in a salvage yard that had an earlier VIN and the driver's door glass and the right 1/4 were VZ-10. A 01D car I saw at Pomona had NX-10 driver's door glass and I know of a 01B car with the same date. This is the data I used to find dated door glass for my car. Windshield data is hard to get.
If you're serious you need to look for cars from the same month and assembly plant. Martin

Astro glass was discontinued as of 1/1/68. The DOT decided it interfered with vision out the side windows, although it continued to be used on Corvettes up until 1970 (I think).

I worked at the Fisher Body plant in St. Louis for 18 years, starting in 1955. Two of those years I stocked the glass line. We started to unload glass two week's before the line started. We stored this glass for emergence use in case we had a glass car that would be held up in some way. So you see the first in could be last out.So goes your date code theory.

Just reinforces my philosophy on GM assembly. Two words you shouldn't use when describing them; ALWAYS and NEVER!
Good information Jim. Tell us more. ![]()

Martin, My car was built in the 2nd week on the Van Nuys line.
Mark, Does that mean that my car wouldnt have had the Astro Glass in it if it was built in the 2nd week of Jan? |

Martin, My car was built in the 2nd week on the Van Nuys line. Mark, Does that mean that my car wouldnt have had the Astro Glass in it if it was built in the 2nd week of Jan? [/ QUOTE ] Per CRG's 67-69 Glass Research Report: http://www.camaros.org/glass.shtml The Astro-Ventilation logo was dropped from the 1968 door glass after Nov '67 (approximately) production. However, one pane of apparently original May '68 door glass with the Astro-Ventilation logo has been observed in a 05C build. The mating glass on the opposite side of the vehicle is Sep '67 Astro-Ventilation glass, and combined with the other dates seen in the set, CRG believes that the May '68 pane had the Astro-Ventilation logo added by LOF to create a matching set, presumably to fill a void in production and/or to use up left-over panes. Of course this conclusion is speculative, but we will continue to watch for other, similar, indications
