Judging by the amount of rust on the rad support, the underside probably looks like a Liberian freighter. These cars were bad in the rust belt.

-------Geez,,, What rust are you referring to??? I see a very small amount along one edge. I live squarely in the middle of the rust belt and find these cars to be particularly well protected as they came from the dealership. There is an older lady just a mile south of me with a 94 Chev wagon that I have been trying to buy for a number of years. It has never sat inside a night and she normally drives somewhere every day, winter or summer. The car has alot more surface rust under the hood as you might expect but floors and quarters are very nice. I know as I have been in the shop where she gets her service work done and have seen the underside close-up. Remember that it is 11 years old. Having four wagons at the moment, I have slowed down on acquiring a fifth or I believe Id bid on this cop-car.......Bill S

[/ QUOTE ] Having bought my fourth Liberian Freighter last week, I'd disagree as well, on the rust issue on this car. Cosmoline works wonders on naval vessels when it comes to rust prevention. If I didn't have those other freighters in my fleet I'd be bidding on this one as well. ![]() |

I looked long and hard for two years before I bought mine, and rust on the rad support was a sign of what was underneath most often. The rear frame is a problem area.
There is a guy in New York state who specialises in these wagons, and has some pretty clean ones. www.bigstationwagons.com I bought mine privately, but would buy from him if anything happens to this one. |

Still missing my '91 Caprice wagon I drove for 5 years. Bought it with 26K on the odo in 2001 or so, two toned it to cover up the old guy's dents and dings, then added some 17" wheels to fill the wheelwells (it had super narrow cheapo tires on it and those look-like-Kmart-but-actually-OEM-Chevy plastic hubcaps when I bought it). It ably and uniquely handled family truckster duties while my family grew from 3 to 5. The 305 was a pig, however (and not miserly-15mpg no matter how I drove). I sold it this year with 76K on it for $6K.
Those '94/96 LT1's are definately the way to go. This cop-spec one may be the coolest optioned one I've seen. I love the lack of woodgrain, but that medium blue velour interior and digital dash are not favorites of mine. I showed my wife that bigwagon website, she just smiled and rolled her eyes. A great gal, but has never quite understood my station wagon fetish..... |

I have a 95, and I absolutely love it. I get more people stopping to talk to me about it than any other car I've owned, and I've had a lot of musclecars. It's quiet, fast, and more practical than any SUV out there, and, after the installation of a few odds and ends, (Hotchkis swaybars and LCA's, programming, Bilstien shocks, etc) is really fun to drive.

I bet they are nice cars, but I will say that they are built sloppily with poor design execution. I had a 1996 Impala SS that I absolutely loved, except for all the quality problems that I and others had. Things like digital odometers that stopped lighting, pinion seals that failed, intake manifold seals that failed, a carpet that wore out prematurely, an ignition switch that needed replacing, a "clock spring" (allows you to honk the horn while the wheel is turning) that failed, and the list goes on and on. And this was all BEFORE 40,000 miles!!!! Oh, and did I mention the floor pans that appeared to be raw steel that got rusty right away??? Unfortunately, these cars were very poorly built.
