That is ridiculous and dangerous. With fines that high some people are going to try and outrun the police.

Can someone explain why 20 mph over is the magic number regardless of the posted speed limit? I've never understood the way the fines are set. Why don't they do it based on % of the posted limit? At least that would be scientifically consistent.
If you are 20 over in a 30 zone, you are going 2/3rds too fast. You are also likely to kill a pedestrian vs just hurting them badly if you hit someone. If you are going 20 over in a 65 zone, you are going less than 30% too fast and your differential to the rest of the traffic shouldn't be as big a deal, although everything will happen faster. ![]()

Residents only !!! I would assume there will be a mass exodus from the State. Watch the real estate market in VA, I'm sure there will be a glut of housing available.

20 over is a felony. That's where the $ amount comes from.

Most cops have told me they use the old addage "9 is fine, but at 10 you're mine". If you are driving more than 15 over on the interstate in Ohio, you can be charged with reckless operation of a vehicle. At 20 over, you're really asking for trouble, even if there is no traffic around. Driving in excess of 85mph may be fun, and I am not going deny ever doing it, but there have been some horrific wrecks here on the freeways by people thinking that they can drive that fast in traffic.
I can't tell you the number of times I've been passed on the right by somebody who doesn't want to be behind the truck in the right lane, but who is blissfully unaware of the traffic pattern ahead of me. If I let them in, I risk having them brake in front of me, which makes me at fault if I rear end them. ![]() ![]() Please obey the posted speed limit. Sort of. ![]()

I wonder if this has anything to do with a strange phenomenon
I have encountered while driving along the Route 81 corridor in VA. On several occasions, I noticed that VA drivers would get in the left lane and purposely drive at the speed limit and block passing in the left lane. This happened too many times for it to be butt-head drivers. I wonder if there was a movement afoot to curtail speeding in the state. Any VA residents on the board? ![]() Nuch
