This past December my wife bought me a great birthday present; 10 laps around Dover Downs raceway in Dover, DE. Today was the big day and I must say that I have never had so much fun. The day started out by driving around the track for the "driver's meeting" in the passenger van. Here we were instructed on the do's and don'ts of driving around the track. Then we got into our driver's suits and we did the ride along portion for those people that signed up for that option. Here we went 4 laps with a driver; this guy was going around 130 which was pretty damn fast for this little track (at least it seemed pretty fast to me). Following that session we were assigned cars and we headed out to the track. There was one instructor car and two customer cars in a line. The instructor would speed up until we couldn't keep up anymore; by the end of the 10 laps I felt like I could have gone faster than the instructor was allowing.
Anyway, I just wanted to share with you my great experience and encourage anyone who has had the urge to try something like this to get out there and do it!!! I had the time of my life and would do it again in a heartbeat.
Plus I gained a whole new appreciation for what those NASCAR guys do each week. It was fun for me with the cars all in a row going 130 tops. Those guys go 180 on this same track, with 42 other cars all trying to get to the front.
