Then some fella from the midwest crafted this terrific plate http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif and it showed up in the mail yesterday. Thanks DC! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif I'll be sportin' this fine addition off the front bumper at SCR12. As I told Schonye, he better get Becky some help to man (woman) the telephones as it'll be ringin' off the hook with advertising like this! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The car does look better than new!! I also can't wait to see it again. And at least I don't have to see that empty space in the garage any more. We filled that space today with a new project (one that's much more realistic for us). Took the truck and trailer down to Maryland and hauled home a 72 Nova. When I pulled my car in the garge tonight and saw the back end of the "new" nova in front of me it was almost like old times. And there's rubber on the road in front of the house again!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Engine bay is nearly finished. Just a little more dum-dum in a spot or two (thanks for the heads up Sammy http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ). I received some great input http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif from Jack Seymour, Schonye, Bill Hodel, and Charley Lillard (great survivor Z28 website Charley http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif) on the plumbing/routing of my TCS system. I received and installed my last few components needed to finish my smog system from Bill Hodel (nice fellow to work with - great product)...

Marlin,
After reviewing my '70 Chassis Assembly Manual, I realize I need a "water temperature switch" to complete my TCS system. I thot the extra wire/connector in my Nova wire harness on the passenger side of the engine bay was for the factory temperature idiot lite (or gauge as appropriate) in the cockpit (I am runnig aftermarket vintage SW gauges including a water temp gauge). It is a green wire with the "L" shaped/ 2-prong connector. I need a source for the Temp Sending Unit that it correct for this application . I believe the sending unit goes on the pass. side of the block between the two rear most spark plugs (using Charley's '70 Z28 website as a reference).
Thanks,
DarrenX33

You do indeed need a two pronged temp unit, one prong for the idiot light the other for the TCS system. This unit is installed in the driver's side head, and on cars equipped with gauges the temp sending unit is installed in the passenger side head. The two pronged unit is still available from GM I believe, somebody has the part number....

Marlin,
There is only one (green) wire going to the 2-spaded connector for this temperature SWITCH (in retrospect, I do not think it is a sender, but rather a switch). My understanding is that there is a jumper wire between the two female connections of the harness and that once the temp gets to a prescribed level the connection is completed and sends a signal to the TCS switch. Chuck Sharin found this thread (http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=55027&highlight=TCS+switch) over at NastyZ28.

A couple of pics showing SINGLE green wire going to the two pronged TCS temp sender in right head.
On the Z-28 with gauges the drivers/left head has water temp gauge sender.......

Recheck the pics I sent you of the TCS on the gutter. If you notice, the green wire is wadded up, rerouted through the gutter a ways, then junctions up to another single green wire that goes to the drivers side head if, as Marlin said, you have the idiot light setup. The car did have that setup from new, but Earl changed that as thats where the sending unit is now for the SW gauges. There should be a plug on the pass side that will need to be replaced with a TCS sending unit, and connected to the green wire that is supplied with the new harness. It is only for the TCS, not the idiot light.
In the day, we didn't bother messing with reconnecting the TCS after putting in the gauges. Damn thing kept the secondaries from opening as quick as we wanted. Smog stuff took horsepower. It needed to leave. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

The two blade plug could indeed have a loop connection, haven't looked at it in a few years http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif Either way, ya gotta get the sending unit with the two spades! I don't recall ever seeing those wire clips on any deuces b4.... Not the first time the deuce version of the CTB/CTC was different than the Z28's.

Sam, Marlin and all, Never was my intent to imply the duece used that little clip thing to hold green wire.
I just posted misc pics of Jack's LT-1 to show the two prong switch and green wire, etc etc
Seems to me that Marlin set us all straight on that several years ago.
I would think that with Jack's vendor info, the above pictures, and the misc nastyz28 threads, that Sam would have this issue under control.
best regards to all,

Can someone tell me if the original style TCS Temp Sensor is larger than the new replacements? The threads are the same but the connector and nut are physically larger. Also, the originals are silver rather than bronze?? Help? I have one which I believe to be NOS but need some to justify.. Thanks!

Schonye sent me some photos of his original survivor SY Deuce (color of this lil fellow ==> http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) and showed this Deuce-nube how the TCS wire for the TCS block switch is actually routed from the passenger side back over to the driver's side. It was plugged into a factory extension wire (L-shaped connector) to get it over to the block hole between the front 2 plugs on the driver's side. As Marlin mentioned this plug was both for the TCS system AND the idiot light in the dash. I can post pix later tonite when I get home. It kind of surprises me that this is yet another Deuce LT1 difference from a Z28 LT1 (wonder what 'vette LT1 did http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif?). The sender/switch hole on the driver's side (betw 1st two cylinders) is encumbered on my Deuce (as is Schonye's) to accomodate my aftermarket (SW) water temp gauge sender that the Roof's installed.
So, FWIW, I will set up my TCS block switch the same way as the Z boys do (passenger side), due to my aftermarket gauge configuration.
Always an education http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif !!

Another of the projects I asked Schonye to leave for me was seat belt restoration. All sixteen belts are present in the car and are in nice shape with tags ranging from 17th, 19th, and 20th week of 1970. All the belts needed a good washing and the front belts needed to be redyed (sun fade). Buckle covers had standard scratches and gouges you would expect for an 18,000 mile car...

The "GM" button decals were all in excellent condition. The metal buckles just needed a good cleaning up and they were good as new. As far as the plastic buckle covers, I took Ed's (Enio45) advice http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif and I started with 1500 grit wet sanding and finished with 2000. I inverted my buffer with wool pad on my vise and used water and 3M Finesse to buff out the buckle covers. This process took about 4 passes (ensuring the pad remains moist) to bring it to this shine...

Couple of folks have asked how to separate the plastic buckle cover from the metal section. I figured this out by trial and error and gubered only one sacrificial "lamb". http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
<font color="blue">Tools and buckle placement. In addition to the larger straight slot screwdriver, I used two putty knifes (you can use whatever is as thin as possible, but still rigid):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/mockingbird812/70%20Roof%20Deuce/Restored%20Components/P1120208.jpg
Place the corner of a putty knife into the gap as shown in below photos and work the blade down into the gap. This will bow out the plastic side of the buckle cover and release a plastic wedge (molded into inside surface of the plastic buckle cover side) from its seated position in the metal portion of the buckle. You have to press the blade down into the gap with a fair amount of force while wiggling it a bit.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/mockingbird812/70%20Roof%20Deuce/Restored%20Components/P1120211.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/mockingbird812/70%20Roof%20Deuce/Restored%20Components/P1120214.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/mockingbird812/70%20Roof%20Deuce/Restored%20Components/P1120217.jpg
Do the same with the 2nd putty knife on the other side:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/mockingbird812/70%20Roof%20Deuce/Restored%20Components/P1120219.jpg
Insert your straight blade screw driver into the female opening (easy Verne, Colin, Bruce, etc http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) and twist it to separate the plastic cover from the metal buckle:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/mockingbird812/70%20Roof%20Deuce/Restored%20Components/P1120222.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/mockingbird812/70%20Roof%20Deuce/Restored%20Components/P1120224.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/mockingbird812/70%20Roof%20Deuce/Restored%20Components/P1120228.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/mockingbird812/70%20Roof%20Deuce/Restored%20Components/P1120229.jpg
Here you can see the small wedge shaped nub that seats in an opening on the side of the metal portion of the buckle when the two pieces are pressed together. This is what you are unseating when you insert the putty blade. When putting the buckle back together fit the plastic cover to the metal buckle first at the end opposite of where the metal belt spade inserts to the buckle. Then you can pivot the plastic cover down and snap it into position: </font>

You know how it goes guys http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif (I know Ed does http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif ), you have the best of intentions of doing all that nasty <u>fill-in-the-blank </u> work, but that car project just keeps calling you back. It was a good day. I got half of all the yard work I intended on doing, but got a good fill of Nova projects done!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Nice job. Did you have to re-dye or re-sew the belts?
mockingbird812
06-20-2009, 07:48 PM
Hey Denis - I did have to redye the belts due to mild sun fade (western PA). They were turning a deep blue. I used "Rit" in hot water, stirred regularly, for 2 sessions of 1 hour a piece. I couldn't get my field stove working so the Mrs. kindly allowed me to use her stove. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I did not need to resew seams or tags - they were in nice shape. I only dyed up to the tags so as not to get dye on them.

The Roof Deuce won't be making its public debut at SCR this year as Ed M. mentioned in another thread http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif . But, I am working to get it up to Bob Ashton's extravaganza in Chicago in November. In the mean time, I have time to do a few small remaining projects.
This project made me scratch me http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif . I had assumed since Don Yenko had a bit of a reputation as being frugal that the "YENKO" emblem on the Dixco hood tach would be stenciled or stamped on. My original white on the emblem was in decent shape but the frame around it was very dull. I polished the entire frame and found this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/mockingbird812/70%20Roof%20Deuce/Restored%20Components/DSC_0029.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/mockingbird812/70%20Roof%20Deuce/Restored%20Components/DSC_0028.jpg
I 'spect the gurus knew this already, but I thought this was pretty unique.

Yes, they were made that way direct from Dixco and shipped to Yenko with the logo already in place. Don didn't apply the logo himself. Many variations of this tach were produced with various logos on the face...apparently you just ordered them direct with whatever logo/packaging you desired and Dixco produced them that way. Most are raised like that, some were flat. I've actually seen the standard Dixco HT/x logo both ways... likely dependant on the time/year of production. FWIW the white Yenko logo WAS indeed a silk screen/tampo done over-top of the raised lettering.

Had to dig deep to find this dusty ol' thread, but thought it was time to update you on the Roof Deuce progress.
First up is a continuation of the Roof's day-two speed parts restoration. Mikey (M22Mike) is a consummate restoration guru who is decent enough (don't let this go to your head Mikey) to share some of his resto secrets. Earl and Linda decided to put their tried and true Hurst Competition Plus shifter that they removed from their '69 Chevelle convertible into their Deuce. This is what it looked like when I got the Nova...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/mockingbird812/70%20Roof%20Deuce/Restored%20Components/P1070519.jpg

Mikey recommended using phosphoric acid (available at Lowes/H. Depot) to remove old finishes in prep for the new plating. Each metal and its finish respond to the acid differently so they have to be monitored. Some items take only a few hours of soaking others may take a day or so. Mikey tip: after you remove the item from the phosphoric and rinse it in hot water while scrubbing it with a stiff brush , use a heat gun or hair dryer to dry it as quickly as possible to avoid flash rusting. I didn't think I would need it out here in the dry old desert - but I sure did. Make sure you use rubber gloves and don't splash that acid on any fabric - it will turn it immediately blue! Here are all of the prepped items (some non-shifter stuff too) I was going to have plated...

I chose my plating types and color based on what I saw as I disassembled the shifter. I selected clear zinc and black zinc. Mikey would correct me and tell me that cadmium was the correct and more durable finish. This was a test resto for me and my local plater did not have cad plating capability so zinc (and chrome) it was. Here are the items back from the plater....

I just happen to like the cad if you can get it. It does have a different look.
It is a better protection, that is why is is still used allot in the aircraft industry.
Carry on CDR
WOW!! Was just checking in to see if anyone had heard anything from our friends in Hawaii and happened upon this update. Don't know how but I had missed the entire Dec 09 post with all the deuce pics. The car looks FANTASTIC!!
Just reinforces the fact that we made the right decision to get it into the hands of someone who could give it the care it deserved. I also love the look of those traction bars. And that shifter looks amazing!!
Earl and I can't wait to see it again. Just looking at the pics actually made my jaw drop. Am really looking forward to getting together with Sam and Schonye so we can chew the fat about the restoration and the good ole days.

Linda - hope you and Earl can meet me and the Deuce at the November MCACN show in Chicago. Thanks for the kind words and for checking in Linda. Say "hey" to Earl. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif
P.S. Forgot to ask you when I visited you in December, the Deuce already had a decent Hurst shifter when it was delivered to you (another variation of the Competition Plus). I am curious why Earl transferred his Chevelle's Competition Plus in the Deuce.
Earl says he just liked the feel of this shifter better. Probably because he was more used to it from running it in the Chevelle. Then he chuckled and said it just looked and felt "manlier"!

Ha! I get that. The shifter handle you guys put in the Deuce is definitely a different angle. It angles back toward the seat and toward the driver.

Roger D and Bergy have inspired me to post some new stuff, although on a much smaller scale...
Making good headway on the restoration of my Mallory ignition system. Figured out how to do my own plating. Found the chemicals locally and mixed the solutions for the process. Felt like I am back in 8th grade science class <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/scholar.gif. I am still working out the kinks in the plating process, but the results have been pretty good so far. STill have to assemble the ignition system and throw it on the a distributor machine, so I will update as it goes back together.

Sam,
Looking good. Anodes, cathodes, +, -, electrons, neutrons and protons; I think you are now a plater and designated Mallory restoration expert.
Are you happy with the results? I did the home phosphate kit at one time with limited unexpected (good) results and a buddy of mine tried the zinc plating deal, minimal success with that though.
Parts look good overall. Looking forward to seeing the finished project.

Thanks guys - havin' fun! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif
Woj, I did another batch tonight and I think I am getting the hang of it. Time, current, and surface area to be plated are the variables that have to be balanced. I'm getting bright, lusterous finish that looks like the fastener bins at the hardware store. I finished restoring the distributor body this evening too. I'll post some more progress shots tomorrow.
P.S. Woj: I don't know if mixing my own solutions (so I know what is in there) is making a difference for me vs. the home kits. I did a bunch of research to determine what the correct ingredients and proportions should be. I am looking forward to the black zinc process as I really like this finish and I feel it is a very close to correct looking finish for many GM fasteners.

As mentioned before I am going to give MCACN's Day Two Concourse judging a shot. The parts used for this judging have to be period correct (not a Jegs catalog) and they will be looking for the original part numbers. These are the Roof's original Cherry Bombs. They had a bit of road rash which i had to massage out. A bigger challenge was that I couldn't find a exhaust temp high gloss Ch. Bomb red so the powder coater put a ceramic coating on the mufflers to seal the heat in and then powder coated over that. Period correct C. Bomb stickers are being made....

Taking this whole Roof Deuce resto beyond its as delivered state to include such detail of the Roof's Day 2 mods has reached new heights and this car truly in a class of it's own!.
Thinking how this car was first one step beyond a regular assembly line car being prepared and shipped by GM as a Copo then further modified at Yenko before being sent through the network to land in the Roof's hands who then added their specific mods to it...it's all too cool!!!

Sam,
I remember back about 7 yrs ago shortly after we started getting back into these cars. I told you I was going to build a 69 Chevelle like I had in High School. I didn't even know the term for it (day two) but it was going to have headers, mallory ignition and plug wires, maybe a different air cleaner, hurst t handle, slots, cragers, or torque thrusts, traction bars and meats out back. You told me then I was crazy to ruin an origianl car like that. I'm thinking you must be certifiable by now. Keep up the good work!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

Tach is the original Dixco HT/x, electric hood mounted which was installed as part of the Yenko conversion. It is indicating faster than actual with the Mallory Coil. I will need to figure out the appropriate resistance to calibrate it better.

The article was originally going to be on the Deuce in stock trim. So the first photo shoot was shot near the end of September and the Nova was stock (except for the slapper bars). I picked a picturesque setting at Saguaro Lake Ranch north of Mesa, AZ. I had been there before and thought it would make a good back drop. The camp dates back to the 40s and is operated by the same family. They lease the land from the Fed Gov't.
Here are a few shots I took (after mimicking what Jeff Koch did <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/whistle.gif ). For those of you familiar with the area out here, the last shot has the Salt River in the background - great for tubing in 115 deg Wx <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/shocked.gif !

I've been talking to Terry about the whole day-two movement for about a year now and he increasingly warmed up to the idea. He liked what MCACN was doing with the "Day-Two Concours" thrust. The problem was convincing his bosses. When he took the idea to them, they told Terry "what's 'day-two'?". Well, Terry hung it out there and convinced his bosses to have confidence in his choice. To appease his bosses he defined "day-two" on the cover: "RETRO SPEED PARTS........FOR PERIOD PERFECTION" Terry also chose to write about the surge in day-two in his editorial, which makes for interesting reading. Sooooooooooooooo, if you like day-two <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="color: #FF0000"><span style="font-size: 17pt">send the editor an email</span> </span> </span> </span> [ tmcgean@hemmings.com (mailto:tmcgean@hemmings.com) ] - he said that is what will sell the bosses on future features of day-two'd muscle cars. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

Jeffrey - your '71 Z looks great. The day-two concours judging at MCACN is for restored cars with period correct day-two speed parts. But, your car would be a BIG hit at MCACN just as it is. What a stance! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif Check with Bob Ashton the big Kahuna with MCACN for details. (http://www.mcacn.com/)

On the spec page for the HMM article I used Pete Simpson's most recent results (Pure Stock) at the race track for the quarter-mile performance.

The inspiration for this photo setting was Randy Leffingwell's American Muscle Car book (Otis Chandler's collection). The specific shot is the H.O. ZL1 Camaro at the train yard - just a BAD, BAD shot IMO!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Actually , it was my 19 year old son Owen that laid down that time! Thanks for using it!
The roof Deuce is one of the coolest cars, period!

Are those header mufflers.they are cool...but watch you're angle ground clearance.......almost damaged my headers on the street..and had to make some adjustments...

Appreciate it Joe. Those are Cherry Bombs (Roof's originals). That is the angle that the headers (Cyclones) gave me. I hang them off the front rear-spring perch. The pipes exit the car about 6 to 8 inches off of the deck. Railroad crossing jumps will have to be done a bit gingerly!!

Jed, send me your address, I bought a couple extra. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif
I went to the Hemmings site, found the phone number, and gave them a call. You can order as many copies as you want and don't have to buy a subscription if you don't want to. Took 3 days for them to get here. Just be sure to be really specific about which mag and which month you're ordering. The lady on the phone kept trying to send me Hemmings Classic Car.
