Keeping with the day-two theme, a couple guys asked about how I mounted the Mallory coil. I didn't want to drill any holes in the firewall so I used some existing holes for the wire gutter to attach this coil (and resistor).

Started with a cardboard template to make sure I had a decent design and fit (would recommend taking own measurements as they may vary from car to car) ....

...dry run for fit. One of the challenges was keeping the TCS relay switch in the stock position and accomodating it behind the coil, so I designed the mount so the coil would be about an inch off of the firewall. This design also allowed me to easily bolt the coil and resistor to my new mount...

Back in the 70's when I bought the coil for my Mallory dual point, Super Shops store told me to mount it at an angle so the "Mallory" name was level. This was to keep to oil inside the coil from uncovering the internal contacts during cornering. Anyone ever hear of this?

Greg - that is a real nice set up you had there under your hood.

Never heard that one before. Suppose that logic of "at an angle so the "Mallory" name was level" would work if you spent a lot of time on surpentine roads or a circle track.

Mystery solved. I got a pm from Al Corporon (AlsV8vair) today, saying he thought he knew who manufactured my Nova's traction bars. He then forwarded a catalog page (looks to be a '71 version) and photo from Drag Dimensions Limited of Downsview Canada. The catalog scan has a detailed blow up of the adjustable snubber. The Roofs remembered the bars were white and I'd say Schonye & co. nailed the original product look. The bars were put on the Deuce just after they bought the car in 1970.

Thanks Al - that sure made my day! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

I was thinking that too. I'm thinkin they need to go back on. (big smile)
I had not seen slapper bars like those on Sam's car before. They really are a pretty unique piece in that you can leave that factory sway bar on, and you can adjust the snubber height with those slotted openings. If I'd have known about them back in the day, I probably would have put a set on.
Restoring them was a best guess situation. Looks like we may have guessed pretty close.

Ih searching for the history on the company and looking for one of the past owners who I found . I got a e-mail one day from a Lady who new Carl Rowland who was another owner og Drag Dimensions. Lesley was into photography and shot the photos, I have others that she has given me permission to use.

Carl Rowland built and raced this car you may recognize
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v605/Aircooled/dragdim-vi.jpg

which later became this car
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v605/Aircooled/Karbeltfiat1.jpg

I do have a few other photos of the track bars being welded on assembly and more info on the company.

Al forwarded photos of two of the Drag Dimensions decals. He secured the permission to sell these designs from the sole surviving owner of the company. I have bought 6 of the small decals and 2 of the large (headers). From what I can tell the quality looks real good. Al said he may be making some T-shirts with these designs at some point. I like the looks of them - definitely a sign you don't see every day. Nice job Al!

Al may be pursuaded to sell DD paraphenalia on this site if there were some interest. I'll post pix of the decals on the Deuce when they come in. These photos show a protective mask over the design....

The Drag-Dimension decals look really great on the Trac-bars!.
It's details like this that add up and make the Roof Deuce what it is, C<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/drool.gif<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/drool.gifL!!!

I haven't compared them w/ the original on my toolbox yet but thanks for the new DD decals you laid on me Al!.
Great to meet you in person too and I hope you enjoy the original Thrush hat!.

On Curly's Fiat, I may be wrong but am pretty sure he told me once that the Drag-Dimension paintjob went on the car temporarily when he was in some sort of disagreement w/ the Karbelt sponsors so not necessarily previous to as noted above nor later either, maybe in-between?.

Here's a couple more shots of the car, another in DD paint also check the bottom picture from Wheelspin as it shows the front weights that slid side to side and locked, one of the subtle details Curly would adjust to suit different tracks, conditions and feel..

I've never gotten to the bottom of the different roof cuts seen in any pictures over the years so there may've been more than one body used?.

Let me tell you something to your restored Yenko Hood Tach.

They changed the complete inner mechanic with a very later dated unit ~1977. You can see the difference in the lighting. Your lighting is placed in front behind the black Yenko bezel. Original the lighting is in the case behind the 8000 RPM display with a large bulb.

Early Yenko Dixco’s had 4 cables: White, Black, Green and Red

Later produced Dixco’s with the lighting in front comes just with tree cables: Black, Green and Red.

Second thing: The adjusting knob looks like a later dated, also in mid-70th years.

About me, the restoring company made just a swap in your tach. They kept the rare original Yenko unit. Probably the Yenko Bezel is also a reprint, it looks like one.

I know they changed the insides as that is what they told me they did. It has three wire leads now.

Adjustment knob looks ok to me But I am no expert. Sounds like you have some insight on this detail. I am confident that the face is original. If you go back in my thread you will see the original face with the embossed "YENKO" emblem on it which are no longer made. This face is what was returned from the tach repair facility and is on the car now.

Hey Swiss, it appears you know a lot about these tachs. That's cool. You know how to fix them? Nobody out there is doing a great job. We've been hoping that somebody could get them right, but it's not happened yet.

If you can, I got one to send you, and I expect a lot of others will too.

Do you have a deuce? Maybe you could share some pics. None of us will live long enough to know it all.

Me, and a friend restore this Hood Tachs here in Switzerland to perfect condition.

In this case, we have all the knowledge to fix them. Nobody is reproducing hood tach parts; it’s a hard way to find them. Some time, we need up to tree old tachs to build a perfect one.

I’m a collector of NOS Hood tachs and old literature; I’m still searching for some special hood tach editions, like a 10’000 RPM Balkamp.

Here a picture from my friend’s collection:

Swiss, the above pic is the same as mine. I'm an original deuce owner. Many of us have looked for someone to fix these tachs as they do go bad for some reason. I don't know what makes them work, but would think that what was available 40+ years ago could be fixed with either the same parts, or something a little better while retaining as much originallity as possible.
If you believe that you can repair these deuce tachs and keep them as original as possible, post your mailing address. I believe you will have some business.
And hey, the T/A Mopars are cool, just not as fast as deuces. (big smile)

If somebody wants a perfect Hood Tachometer restoration, please send full picture documentation. Also from the inside to:

dixco@gmx.ch (mailto:dixco@gmx.ch)

We will let you know, how big is the parts search and restoration work. In other words, we give you our opinion, if a restoration is practicable or not.

Here a picture from a full restored ultra-rare Dixco HT/x – 977 from 1972.

I didn't get any pics. They were all forbidden/removed. Need to get them in an e mail file somehow so I can run it off on my copier.

When I met Earl and Linda Roof for the first time at the tail end of 2009 at their home in Creekside, PA, they gave me their remaining oil-change-worth of the only oil good enough for their Deuce. I was flying back to AZ, so I left the 5 quarts of Wolf's Head at my sister's in Oakdale near the PGH Airport. I recently got them back to Dayton and then brought them back to AZ last week to reunite with the car. It's a little thing, but serves to highlight the Roof's passion for their Deuce. What a combo: Wolf's Head Racing Oil + Sunoco's high octane 260! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/laugh.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/burnout.gif

Craig,

Can't remember off the top of my head. The mayor (Schonye) will have to chime in. I do know they were not cheap!

They were hand cut by a guy in MIN I believe. This was the last one he was going to do. He did very nice work, but they were very expensive.

So who else? Classic Industries and a few others offer them for over $300. I've even thought about trying to find someone in the San Antonio area that has a "real" Deuce and see if I could get a pattern and then paint the stripes on. Heat is hell on them -- when I redid my old Silver Deuce, I painted them on.

I can remember driving by Wolf's Head offices in Oil City in the 1980s and early 1990s. Seeing Oil City, PA today, it is hard to believe that this little PA town was once the home of Pennzoil, Quaker State, and Wolf's head.
