View Full Version : Roof Deuce Restoration

I really like seeing folks' in-process photos of the restoration of their cars so I thought I'd return the favor.
Most of you probably remember this car being talked about a few years ago on this site. Steve Sandlin bought the car from the Roofs and about a year ago I caught Steve in a weak moment and now I own it. The car is being restored in Donahue, Iowa by the mayor and his crew. The car is going back together now and is a few months from completion.
Earl and Linda Roof were the original owners of this Deuce and bought it in Canonsburg on September 19th 1970.
As found photos:

Note the smog pump bracket is still in place in this photo:

Sammy - I have all of the Roof's Day-2 parts and most are restored. Car will intitially go together nearly stock and eventually Day-2 including original Cherry Bombs, slapper bars, McCreary tires, Fly-eye. headers, Ansen aluminum slots, etc. will come later.

Ed Montini (enio45) and I talked about getting a transport truck together (like Stefano and Mike G. do) and see if we can find 4 other cars in our area to make the same journey to Collinsville with us. I'll post something on a separate thread.

One of the benefits of a low mile car, even if it needs to be restored, is that many of the original parts are still with the car. I am fortunate in that I had to track down relatively few parts. Here are some of the more significan items that I had to track down (both of these were reworked/restored by Jerry Macneish):

The distributor came from Jeff Dotterer. I believe Earl went down the road, and got the original carb back from his neighbor.(Earl correct me if I'm wrong.) The original dist went in an old chevy truck, if I remember the story correctly.
We did send the carb to McNeish.
I hate to bring this subject up since there seems to be a pretty good battle going on about it, but on the lift bracket issue, I've seen 2 maybe 3 original deuces that had the double leg frt bracket while mine has the single. None were painted and seemed to be natural. I do wonder a little about the possibility of the frt at least being slightly silver cad plated. As Grady mentioned, it seems like there was something on them, but it didn't last long. But then maybe not. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Again I say, it's this "always" and "never" thing. I refuse to believe that, given the human factor on an assembly line and the number of different suppliers across the country, every single car that came down those lines had exactly the same parts, stampings, finishes, yadda, yadda, yadda as the car before them. There were differences! Accept it.
Too many self proclaimed experts should take a closer look at the english language. They may believe they're GOOD, but they need to take note that there are TWO "O"s in that word.

That tar like substance is rubber compound from the good old McCreary Tire Factory where Earl worked once upon a time. By the way Sam and Schonye, the reverse lock out rod is still here and we also have the T-handle that we used on the shifter. It's actually the second one we bought since Earl stripped the threads on the first one.

Hey Dennis,
I concur http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif . There was no part # or manufactures label/marking to be found on them. Schonye says he hasn't seen these types before. I'll let you know if I unearth anything.
Schonyenko2
02-09-2009, 07:36 AM
Their quality control is kinda unusual. The snubber adjustment tower is a well manufactured piece, but the mounting plates,(as you can plainly see) were hacked, and never dress ground leaving a pretty nasty looking torch cut. I had heard of these before, but these are the first I've ever seen. No name, or stamp anywhere. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
If I'd have known about them back in the day, I'd have had a set on my deuce.

Here is Linda's posting from 6 Feb 2006 wrt the modification to the traction bar mounting plate area:
Earl says he bought the traction bars at Auto Parts store on Gompers Avenue. I think this was Sam's Papa's store. Earl's uncle Jack Rising used to work for this store. Earl says there were brackets on the bars for the shocks to bolt to but he cut them off so he didn't have to take the sway bar off . Then he built a set for the neighbor's Nova. He says he put the traction bars on because he was tired of hearing the springs rap when he power shifted. One night we took the car to the Cadet down at Kittanning. After we had everyone's attention by driving through a few times, I got behind the wheel and took it through the parking lot. At the end of the lot where it was dark we did a quick driver swap and Earl burned it out of the lot and slapped it through the gears out on 422. Then we switched back and I drove it back through the parking lot so everyone thought I was the one horsing it. We had a lot of fun that night.

Nice pics Sam! The 'CTB' in yellow on the side(s) of the block is consistent with other original engines, as is the white 'X's on the ends of the heads. The extra yellow writing is also consistent with others, although each engine seems to have different writing - my engine has a yellow 'JH' for example, written in paint with a long horizontal run down the side of the oil pan. The casting date of the engine is fairly early compared to others, as many were cast on the 18th then assembled on the 20th.
Cool slapper bars!

Schonye, Everything looks GREAT in the pictures!!! Can't say how much it means to us that Sam is keeping this car day 2. I think if you look harder you'll see a 4 20 and a 4 17 rather than an "A". As far as I know AO SS wheels were dated with numerals, not letters... making them April 20 and April 17, If that's the case they aren't "4 1/2 months early" and are actually pretty consistent with the wheel dates of most every other Deuce. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif
Erik and I inspected this car when it was still home in Indiana, PA a few years ago but I forget what type of lugnuts were on it... are they chrome plated, or stainless capped? Pretty sure they were just plated, not the capped factory type you'd find on SS Chevelles.

Hey Jeff, Nice to hear from another local! I was originally from Penn Run and most of my family still lives there. Most of the time when we took the Deuce over to visit we would go through Clymer and then in to Penn Run. It was a slight short cut for us and a change of scenery instead of always going through Indiana. So back in the day the Deuce was no stranger to Clymer.
Sam, will have to check with Earl on when the Ansen's went on.
YENKO DEUCE REGISTRY
02-10-2009, 08:50 PM
Joe is correct, that date is would be a 4 17 as letters were not used. The wheel dates are spot on with the other original deuce wheels, as they were purchased directly from MotorWheel by Yenko - not from GM. He apparently placed a pretty big order all at once given the consistency of dates amongst the cars. Although Yenko obviously had plenty of stock, if he could get away with not switching out the wheels on a given Deuce - he would. But one original owner insisted that they change the wheels, so they did - but simply tossed a handful of 'Y' centercap decals on the front seat!
Sam, why no overspray???

Personal preference Marlin. In my (feeble) mind, I got the motivated, enthusiastic, GM painter back in the day who just couldn't stand overspray on the underside of the car and painted my Deuce the way he would have painted his. If it makes you feel any better, there is spray thru on the SS and XT wheels! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif
BTW, the original XT spare is dated "4 17" (another Friday assembled wheel http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif )

Is that a prototype rosewood wheel hanging on the wall? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

In my younger days, I used to stop at a rather "dark" bar in East Moline called the living room East. This be our Living Room South. No cutting, welding, etc. Pretty much reassembly after paint so we don't contaminate the fresh paint. It used to be an Allis Chalmers dealership.
The steering wheel was givin to me by a Long Grove fireman who had a small antique shop in town until he sold the building. He didn't know what the hell it came off of either.
The next time the lovely Mrs. Cumby comes this way, you 'll have to stop out. Maybe we can find you a new yard sign. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Joe comes thru: My hood tach was sent out for rework at Auto Instruments recently and it was determined that the innards were no longer working and were unrepairable due to specific parts availability, so they put new tach workings inside. I asked them to address the yellowed face. They said that they could not access the inside face because of the Dixco assembly process where the lense was glued to the Yenko Crest bezel. Well Joe worked his magic when the hood tach came back to Donahue and the results are below. Mighty impressive Joe http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif !! Looks great! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Looks good...I think Auto Instruments is telling you stories. The lense shouldn't have been glued to the bezel. The faceplace just pops on, and the lense is removable with small screwdriver. I'd be interested in those original Dixco innards they took out and claimed were unrepairable if they didn't keep them.

Yeah, that sounds like a story unless someone glued the bezel to the lens at some point. The bezel snaps on and off, and sometimes in half http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

Mark, Luigi's is still in business and going strong, even selling their own sauce at Tate's supermarket in Clymer.
Joe, No pics with the stripes on. Earl shot a whole roll of film the day before we took them off. When we notified the developing lab that the pics had never arrived, they claimed they had gotten "lost". We've always been very disappointed about that.
Schonye, did you get a package yet? Went out on Tuesday.
Sam, so what will this car be known as now? Sam's Deuce(isn't there another Sam with a Deuce)? Griffith's Deuce? Sam Griffith's Deuce? I'm still trying to figure out what our new user name should be. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
Earl says we ran the original wheels for about 3-4 years before putting on the Ansens.
Earl and I were talking about the tach the other day. He said that for some reason every time he turned on the headlights on the car the tach would drop about 200-400 rpms so he disconnected the light in the tach.

Nothing yet Linda. So what do you think is a good price to split? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Funny how the original owner/car name seems to kinda stay with the car. With us, there'll always be a Moses deuce, a "Ten seconds to Heaven" (Wild Bill Edel) deuce, and at least with us, always a Roof deuce. When you've owned them as long as you have from day one, there's part of your soul in that car that never leaves.
To bad about the pics. Deuce stripes are like fingerprints. No two sets are exactly alike. It would have been cool to see how your had been put on.
And thanks for the compliment, but most of the time it's more like Orange county chopper around here. Thank Heaven I'm the sane one. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Hey sane one http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gifI priced the Caddy, don't think Sam will be willing to go that high, especially since we'll both be getting a cut. I'm thinking of buying another horse when I retire, maybe I should start checking prices on those!!
For some reason Earl and I didn't take a lot of pics when we were first married. Have sometimes wondered why that was since he had a really good camera and dabbled in photography and developing his own pictures when he was stationed in Germany.
I agree that part of your soul stays with the car. Every time I see another piece completed it brings back an old memory!!

Hey Linda - thanks for the info on the Ansens. Joe S. did a great job on your original SS wheels, don't you think? Not sure they looked that nice when you 1st saw the car on the Yenko lot! I will forever call this Deuce the "Roof Deuce" you can be sure of that - just like Schonye said. What was the name of the Italian restaurant in the basement on Philadelphia St. I tried to google it but did not recognize any of the names that came up. Ate there many a time over the years. There were plastic grapes and vines hanging from the ceiling.
Ah, it just came to me................Bruno's! yum! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Naw, that's Joe. Probably sleeping under there.
We were planning on putting headers on the car. Sam had wanted white like the Roofs had. So we sent a set to Jet Hot to have coated arctic white. Unfortunatly the white looks very thin, and Jet hot insists that's the way they are. (not happy) So Sam made the management decision to put on the manifolds for now, with the intent, down the road, to get a better coating on the headers, and install them.
I've always had good results from jet hot, but I could have bombed these with VHT, and had them look better. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

02-21-2009, 05:59 PM
Yes Sam. We sent the original headers to Jet hot. In the past, I've used the method of spraying VHT on the headers, them blowing heat up the tubes with a torch to dry the paint, them keep adding coats until I get the desired result. I thought Jet hot might have a better lasting process as after a year or so the paint flakes off. White is always difficult. Touch a tube with a dirty, or oily hand, and it's permanently there.

Door reassembly. Original paper vapor barrier goes back on. Note the skewed way they were glued on at the factory. Schonye recreated this special factory touch by lining up the holes in the paper with the original screw holes of the door panel.

The original A arm bolts were very pitted. Where we send parts out to be phosphated, it's 65.00 for a bolt, or a bucket of bolts. We have a 69 camaro in here also, whose owner could care less if he has cad bolts or not. So we used his, waited until we had a half bucket of hardware, and changed out the bolts.
The alt plugin on the original harness, and both of my deuces are the same as pictured.

Sammy, you aren't going anywhere with that cream puff that you have! There's no way I would let you leave without me driving it one more time. Do they even sell Kakes out there?
We went out to dinner tonight with a couple of friends from the old gang that we hung out with back when the deuce was still tearing up the streets. We got to talking about the car and I mentioned that everyone calls it a "she" now and how in my mind it had always been a "he". Earl, and the friends we were with, said they had always thought of the car as a "he" also. I said that maybe Schonye had done a sex change operation on it during the restoration. Earl's comment, "Yeah, he probably left off a couple of nuts!" http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif You can clean him up but you've got to be careful where you take him!!!

Sorry Sammy. The fire chief lives there and it's grass fire season in IA. I think people had half of Scott co. on fire today by being stupid and burning leaves on a windy day.
Your tax dollars were well spent by fema today. Many of our deptments were able to get brush trucks for this kind of fire event through fema grants. Nobody lost a house today.
Linda, I truly thought about the "she" when I wrote about the deuce. You called it, an it. An "it" would have no nuts. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif I've always used a female conotation with mine, so that's where the "she" came from. But mostly back in the day, we just said," The deuce".

Schonye, we also usually refered to the car simply as "the Deuce". I would love for you to start a thread about your Deuce and the story of how you came to buy it and a little about it's life back in the day, complete with lots of old pics. I'm realizing now just how special long-time original owners are and how really attached they are to their cars. As you said earlier "a part of their soul stays with the car". It's almost like "our" Deuce was one of our kids and even though "she" has left the nest we will always want to keeep track of "her" and see how "she" is doing! So far we couldn't be happier with where she is now(with you and a few of her kin), and where she will be eventually(with Sam,a former local).

I have just returned from bbbenny's house and must say, seeing first hand, you guys do a beautiful resto job on the cars you do! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbang.gif

Ahh... you've been up to see the Dutchman. Benny has some nice cars. We've been happy to have helped him with some of them. Plus, he's good people.(If he could just stay away from that Sammy). http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Thanks for the kind words. Hope to make your aquaintance some day. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Same here Ken! I didn't get to look at the car very well the first time I saw it. Ask the Plowman and bbbenny where I was when I first got there. I went right under the car. Everything looked the same as what you are doing to the Roof Deuce! And bbbenny's is a Drag Car!
PS, don't worry about Sammy, I'm gonna try and ween him to some different CAKE!

I'm dragging my Deuce project out from hibernation and have a question. Do you have the location dimensions for the hood tach? My car did not have the original hood on it when I bought way back so I've got a correct hood now and need to drill it for my hood tach. The picture can get me close but I thought you might have some measurements.
BTW, your restoration looks fantastic. Thanks, Bob

Hey Bob, I wondered where you've been. I'll try to get you some location pics and shoot you an e mail. Git er done. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

I've got measurements somewhere, I'll see if I can find 'em. No need to be too exact with the tach location, they were sort of like stripes - 'close was good enough'!

Bob,
Here are a few reference photos for a "ball park" reference with and without(a bit hard to see) tach in place. This hood is original to the car.

These pictures will work great.
I took a long break from working on my car; I really do not have a place to work on it during the winter. I'd like to get the paint on this Fall. I've debated the bc/cc vs. ss until I can't see straight; I'm going with ss (I think). Got a good formula for PPG ss Cranberry Red?

Bob, I have a template somewhere. I see if we can scan it and send one to you. I have a ppg bc/cc formula if you want it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Bob,
Joe Barr (CamaroJoe) has quite the collection and should be able to give you an idea. Of course it depends on condition. Here are my originals, pock marks, faded, and all >>>>

I tried to find the fairly recent thread on radiator cap restoration, but couldn't http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif . Someone suggested using Windex and quad-ought steel wool. Worked wonders! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif I spent the last two evenings using plenty of elbow grease as it is pretty slow going. My Windex had a little vinegar (acid) in it which I think helps. Last photo compares my restored original to a reproduction. It is not a bad repop, but there are differences in the brass rivet and some details in the letters.
Big thanks to the fella who suggested the Windex and 0000 steel wool http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif !

Thanks Chuck - Schonye will have to chime in on his source and cost for this repop cap. (Be advised - i asked Schonye to save a number of projects for me to restore including this cap). Restorable caps? some of the folks like Jason "SuperNovaSS" will have to weigh in on this.

Any one taken one of these rad. caps apart before? I did a pressure check on my originial and it would not hold pressure. I would like to rebuild it. The rubber seal/gasket is still flexible and appears to be in nice shape, but it is compressed flatter as compared to my repro.
Any guidance is appreciated. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Chuck, the repo cap came from Ron Norman, at McHenry Classics in IL. I can get you a nbr if you need it. I don't remember what the cost was.

The stainless RC26 15# cap is available from GM for $8.43 on GMPartsdirect. The part number is 6410206. It looks good for the money. Earl
