Thanks. Would love to hit the the Ohio Chevelle show. It's a VERY good one. August is chock o block for me already - will be out of town for 3 of the 4 weeks. My little sis is visiting with us now and asked to go for a ride and she really appreciates these old muscle cars and had a blast. There are quite a few car shows in the area that I would like to get out to. Can't wait!

Sam, i don't think you should take the car out....considering how old it is, you should probably roll that old thing back in the garage and cover it up so no one can see it....or better yet, send it back to me where i can at least keep it dry and covered....just sayin

Or even better, send it on a holiday. To Western Canada where I would invite all 396 cubes into my home and give it an Irish welcome before sending it home.

It would then return home with an Irish blessing and plenty-o-miles. :)

Well here is my challenge: Driving it 340+ miles round trip is probably not going to happen (let the spears fly!!!). Yes I would let it get rained on but the possibility of breakdown on a major highway gives me the willies! So, I am left with trailering it. I no longer have a hauler nor a trailer. I will see what I can conjure up in the mean time.

Eddie - your reverse psychology/tuff love is so, so transparent. Not a bad tact tho!!!!!!! ;>)

Glad Grady stepped up and you and the Chevelle are attending....now we must have you and Phil park next to one another....after all, we have only been trying to have you two park next to one another for what seems like a decade.

Ah, the thanks are going in your direction my good man. It was nice to see you and Rachel and spend the afternoon together.

Eric used his highly acute sleuthing skills to track down an ignition system gremlin that was causing the Chevelle to hiccup a bunch and was progressively getting worse. Turns out there was a poor connection for the points. Changed out the condenser and spark plugs as well. Set timing and dwell and she was feeling her old self again in no time.

When we did an initial timing check, it turns out that total mechanical advance was 46-47 degrees! We saw the original owners (Wayne Tuck) handy work with day-two performance mod to the springs to provide this extra advance. This sparked a memory I had from a conversation with Wayne a few years back. He boasted part of his setup for racing was that he installed a kit to provide 48 deg total advance - I included this note in the 2008 HMM article about his car.

Needless to say, between Eric's handy work on my Chevelle's Holley (restored last year) and the distributor, things are running real good now.

THANK YOU Eric!!!

Super time at NOCC show!! Great people, neat cars, good grub! Finally got the "twins" together and they felt very comfortable for having never met before! Woj's is an INCREDIBLE specimen! Now time to prep for MCACN this fall. I asked Bill Schultz (Rita's hubby) to do another caricature like he did for my Deuce a few years back. True to form, he knocked it out of the park! The details of his art work should give you a clue to some of the day2 transformation that my Chevelle will under go.

Big thanks again to Grady for gittin' me there in style!!!....

Dave - not exactly sure, but here is what Bob Ashton relayed to us....

"Located in big room, close to vintage, third block from the chute. Two blocks closer to the three copo's and the zl1 were last year. open in all four sides"

hope this helps - see you there "neighbor"!

“Fit” is a subjective term. I finessed the passenger's side in this evening. It was MUCH easier than the driver’s side. That side was a challenge. The reverse lockout linkage/pivot point had to be removed. The distance between the headers and steering column, z-bar, and engine mount are paper thin!!! The trajectory of the output ends of each header are kind of heading in different directions. Still have some more finessing but the sound these things will make should be worth it!

Glad the show goers were able to enjoy my Chevelle, except for the part that it didn’t show up. Well, I had a few technical set backs leading up to the show and was not able to recover, so I really had no choice but to give up my slot to Grady and his beautiful D2 COPO Camaro - you’re welcome MCACN goers! Yeah, I am very grateful for the overall condition of this Chevelle. That is a new Gardner exhaust with my car's original exhaust hangers that are nearly pristine. Eric Gardner was blown away by the hangers' condition (I'll post a photo later). Car was well cared for over the years and was not garaged for just its first year of life and has only accumulated 32K miles.

Fair question Verne. So, this is what I know. OO told me that when he had his car set up for its best results at the track for the quarter mile, he had M&H slicks that were 29.5" tall (on 15x7" wheels) and with such a tall tire he finally settled on 4.88 gears. He remembered the engine revving to 6200 rpm through the traps with this set up. This photo was taken in 1971 with the tall M&H's out back, so I can't tell you when he actually bought these, but maybe some others will have information on when they were debuted.

Yeah, the truck. It’s a beaut. I’ll work on tracking it down - how hard could that be?

That was OO’s dad’s ‘66. That pick up is about 5 years old in that picture and looks to be in nice shape (for a rust prone Ford) despite the salty/wet southern VA winters. I think OO’s habits of taking care of his vehicles were picked up from his Dad. BTW, you might be able to see the red interior on the truck. That color scheme, of course, was OO’s inspiration for his Chevelle. Wayne and his Dad have always had a close relationship.

Yes, they actually were available in 1968. I had the very same pair of cheaters on my 1st (ordered new) '68 L79 Malibu back then. This is a poor black and white Day 2 pic of that car taken with an old Polaroid camera in summer of '68.

Thanks Chevyman - those are Lakewood “traction bars’ (really they are replacements for stock lower control arms). Easy swap out and just bolt right in - no drilling required like Lakewood "Ladder Bars". I bought these at a garage sale awhile back and didn’t know their application but thot they were cool looking. This article (notice the author’s name!) helped to piece together what was going on - some kind sYcer provided this....

No problem.....just wish it was a better photo. Come to think of it, those cheaters were purchased early in 1967. Bought them for a '57 Chevy 150 2-door sedan that I raced during '67, then used the same tires and black steel wheels on that '68 Malibu the following year for trips to the drag strip.

A little off-topic, but I hope you guys don't mind a true story about cheater slicks and ice. Spring of 1968: a buddy also had a beautiful '57 Chevy, and he put his cheaters on, just for looks, one weekend when the snow was melting around here. He just couldn't wait. 6 am on the following Monday morning. 5 of us in his car on our way to work (we carpooled), we hit a patch of ice at about 50 mph and rolled the car 1.5 times. Car ended up upside down in the ditch. No seatbelts of course. 5 bodies and 5 lunch buckets flying around inside the car during the rollover. We crawled out through the back window which had popped out in one piece. None of us were seriously hurt, but the car was totalled. That was a very sad day and a hard lesson learned.

Funny (kind of) ending to the story. About 6 years later, 1974, I had just gotten married, and the new wife and I rented a house on the very same farm in front of which we had rolled that '57 Chevy. I told her the story and one day we walked the ditch where the car rolled. We found a Steppenwolf 8 track tape that flew out of the car 6 years earlier. I gave it back to my buddy and to this day it's the only thing he still has from that car.

BTW, I LOVE the Day 2 look of your '69! Think I'll do that with my '68 just for the memories! As you mentioned, it's all bolt-on and can be changed back to stock at any time.....

Yeah Aaron, Dave cracks me up too! We really need to encourage him to come out of his shell more. i can only imagine the cracks he makes from the cockpit to his passengers - must be a hoot!! ;>)

So, my plan with D-2ing my Chevelle was that all speed parts would easily attach or at worst bolt on without modding the structure of the car. To that end, I wanted to provide a stable attachment for the Hurst Super Boot/Competition Plus combo (for spirited shifting) without drilling holes in the trans hump due to the larger footprint of the boot base plate....

How much time have you spent in the car with the garage lights off just staring at the gauges? Nice fabrication work on with the shifter boot bezel adapter.

Great day-two change over!

Excellent question Phil. The only thing I will say is, the gauge lights are very mesmerizing! And, even though you haven’t asked, so far I am not making motor noises with my mouth. thanks‼️

I don't see what the big deal is...it's just a really nice, super clean, highly detailed, 4 speed, L78 Chevelle...oh, and it's black.

Other than that it's just a Chevy :smirk:

1. Invent something to make me millions!
2. Own my own Island get-a-way
3. Usurp Bob as head of MCACN
4. Steak Sam’s shifter boot bracket idea:biggthumpup:

I think that about sums it up!!! Nice work Sam! Man I can’t wait to see this car and between you and “Philvelle” as I call him:hmmm:, I’m diggin’ these cars!!

Thanks a bunch guys! Sunday I had a nice clear, crisp, sunny (cold) day to exercise the Chevelle and, more importantly, enough rain lately to wash the roads of that pesky salt. She ran real strong and seemed to like the 30 deg. weather. Took Lori along and she was impressed with the car's grunt (just 1/2 throttle). These are break-in miles as last fall I pulled the engine and asked Eric to go through it to make sure all was in order. All looked good except for the front main bearings which were beginning to show some scoring. This most likely as a result of the car's drag racing days and the resulting momentary starvation of oil flow toward the front of the crankshaft from repeated hard launches . Everything else looked good. So, a replacement of the bearings, a crank polishing, new rings and a light hone of the original bore and all of the original rotating assembly was put back together. Original valve springs were replaced for obvious reasons. So it will be a couple hundred more miles before I can really get on it but, all indications are that she is VERY healthy! Here is a short clip from the backend to let you hear what the newly refreshed insides sound like! (please excuse my crooked exhaust tips as I have a bit more massaging to do there). Enjoy! (Thanks to Bruce, Jody, and “the computer guy” for their persistence in getting the Youtube video posting feature to work again)

Bill,

Yes, thru Gardner, but the mufflers are their free-er flowing version (can't remember what they call it) that has bit louder/deeper tone. Outside appearance is OEM-like but there are fewer baffles inside. BTW, these Super Scavengers are pretty tame loudness-wise until you get on it a bit and then the volume and quality of sound goes way up!

So I am wrestling with which air cleaner to go with. I see a bunch of round “fly-eye” a/c’s used and was hoping to find something different that looks good. The below triangular type popularized by Weiand, Ram-Flo, Edelbrock, etc. may be a bit late to the game for my ‘69 wrt when they were introduced, so I will have to consider that (suggestions are welcomed). If I use this Ram-Flo I will have it replated so it pops. Regardless of which I choose, I want to address PCV on the passenger side of the engine and will most likely use carb vacuum to take care of it. So, just like I did with the Roof Deuce I used M22Mike’s (Mike A) inspiration to create a junction between the VC and the air cleaner and I thought I would post one way to take care of this. I like simple so I used copper and steel so I could get away with soldering. I may paint this black eventually although there is a definite steam punk vibe going on now...

This is the stuff I dig the most! It's all this little detail stuff that about 95% of the people that see the car will not know what they are looking at. Yet, in the end with the whole package on display, they are mesmerized and the reason why is all the little details like that came together to make that package!!:worship:

Small progress, little details, big impact (IMO). After much needed assistance from Rick Nelson, I disassembled my wiper motor/washer pump. Next I degreased (1st photo) and prepped with muratic acid (2nd photo) all pieces to be plated and sent everything out for cadmium plating. I got my pieces back today (3rd photo) and it’s time for reassembly! (Extra plated pieces are for my vintage aluminum water pump).

Hey Dave - Yes, with a catch. Metal Brite (937.278.9739 ask for Jim or Mike at 2445 Neff Rd. Dayton OH), does mostly chrome, nickel, and copper plating and some ceramic coating. They are my conduit to Hohman - a large outfit that does mostly industrial and mil spec plating. Hohman will not deal with end users like me but you can use Metal Brite as a pass through. They ain't cheap but do a good job. As with most plating, the more you can give them the better off value-wise you will be. They charge a minimum to cover their set up so save up your pieces and give them a bunch all at once. M Brite is doing a pair of BBC valve covers for me now and appears to understand the concept of original factory finish chrome vs most folks desire for "show" quality chroming.

Got a bunch of parts with Mike Barr right now. Usually does great work but having some issues with the last job. He is standing behind the issues and we are working through it. Sometimes that is the best that you can ask for. Mike has been doing this since the 70's. He does know his stuff.

Big shout out to Rick Nelson for his detailed reassembly instructions of my wiper system specifically reattaching a solenoid to the wiper pump frame with 4 relatively delicate tabs. Thanks for the kind comments fellows. Below photo is the little bugger that I am waiting for in Saturday’s mail (Magnetic Relay Switch to place the wipers in the park position). I fried this when I incorrectly set up my electrical test of the wiper motor  ! Then I’ll throw the whole thing back together and reinstall on the car. The other photo is my progress to date.

And Tom (WilmasboyL78), thank YOU for your bold prediction that this car will never see inclement weather. Fear not, I plan to make this ol’ Chebby my Daily Driver - I am even planning to disable a couple 2-3 pistons to turn my ‘velle into gas-sippin’, tree-huggin’, eco-friendly means of transportation. I’ll even start tracking my mpg in my signature so you will see how good of an idea this is! :naughty:

P.S. Darrell, yes I’ve got an extra NOS 4215C if that is what you need. Send me your mailing address via pm.
