’69 Malibu Chevelle SS L78 4 Speed

I have owned this Super Sport for a little over a year and it came with good documentation, but I hadn’t talked to the original owner. Over the past year, I established a virtual relationship with him through mail, phone calls, and email and on St. Patrick’s Day this year my son and I met with him at his home in Roanoke, Virginia.

It became very obvious to me from my earliest contact with Wayne that he really enjoys talking about his old ride. He was a wealth of information on the history of his old ride and always had a twinkle in his eye when he was reliving the adventures he had with his Chevelle.

Wayne was twenty years old and living in Roanoke when he bought his first new car. He had a good job working in the maintenance department at the local General Electric plant. He had been saving his money for some time to buy a high performance car so he could race at the local tracks and on the street. There were a lot of muscle cars in town and Wayne was itchin’ to become a part of the scene. To get the best deal on his Chevelle he traveled 30 minutes south of home to the small town of Rocky Mount, Virginia. Although Roanoke had a Chevy dealership, he made his best deal at Wickline Chevrolet Corp. in Rocky Mount. Wayne was very proud of the deal he struck: $3300.00 even, with no trade in. He placed his order on Saturday, the 8th of March with his salesman, Hoover Potter. Prior to placing his order, Wayne considered the other HiPo offerings of the day from MoPar and Ford. He recalled that a Hemi Superbee was in contention, but the best deal was $400 more than the Chevelle, and therefore, “no-go”. A friend, who Wayne looked up to, was an avid bowtie racer and told him about the minimally advertised potent solid lifter Chevy “RAT” motors. That was all Wayne needed to know.

He ordered his car as follows:
* SS 396 Equipment
* “375 engine” (L78)
* 4-speed Transmission (“Close Ratio”)
* Positraction Axle
* 3.73 Rear Axle Ratio
* Special Instrumentation
* Vinyl Trim
* Undercoat
* Tinted Glass
* Door Edge Guards
* Remote Control Side View Mirror
* Rear Speaker
* AM Push Button Radio

He selected black paint and a red vinyl bench seat interior. His father had a ’66 Ford Custom Cab pick up in the same color scheme and Wayne had always liked it. Wayne’s father also influenced him in selecting a remote controlled side view mirror as he felt it was a practical safety consideration.

Wayne has told me on more than one occasion how the number “13” played a prominent role in the ownership of his Chevelle.

* Down payment was $1300
* It took 13 weeks from placing the order to delivery (remember there was a strike at the Baltimore plant in ‘69)
* Wayne was 13 days shy of 21 years old when he took delivery
* Last two digits of his license plate were “13”
* The oil filter he used was a Fram PH-13
* Chevelle was delivered to Wayne on Friday, June 13th.
I asked Wayne with all the references to the number 13, did he have any bad luck with the car. He laughed, “It was bad luck for everyone I raced.”

Speaking of racing, Wayne found plenty of time to race both on and off road. He has plenty of street racing stories he’ll gladly tell you, including burying the needle “straight down” in an extended race with a ’70 Hemi Charger when he still was still running his “3.73s”. Off road he raced at tracks in Virginia including Elk Creek, Waynesboro, and his favorite, New London Drag Strip and in North Carolina at Piedmont. Wayne's best E/T was 12.83 seconds at 108 m.p.h. He accomplished this with Hedman headers, 4.88 gears, and 29.5 tall M&H Racemaster slicks (9 or 10 wide) mounted on 8x15” steel rims. He made no mods to the suspension, but was very careful in monitoring and adjusting tire pressure. He was very particular with regard to tuning too. One thing Wayne recalls is setting the total advance to 48 degrees. He also performed some minor mods to the engine including a 3-angle valve job on the heads, adding extra valve springs and equalizing spring pressure with shims. Wayne really liked the 4.88 gears and was devout about shifting at 6,000 rpm. He felt it was the right gear for the taller tires. He recalled that the 4.88s resulted in 6200 rpm through the lights. Wayne can remember being told off by a few race fans for not running his car harder. Wayne had seen too many guys “blow their engines” because of undisciplined driving practices. He stuck to his guns, still had impressive E/Ts, AND managed to hold onto the original engine and drivetrain.

Wayne remembers one race event in particular. His first cousin and her boyfriend joined him and his wife at the New London Drag Strip. Just prior to the beginning of eliminations, his cousin came up to Wayne in his Chevelle and said, I have two nickels. Put them in your pocket for good luck . Wayne tucked them in his pocket. He went on to win his class at the event. He knew he had to commemorate the event so he glued the nickels to the top of the Class Winner trophy (Note: coins on the trophy have been inspected and are validated as original and application/date code correct. The coin on the left is dated 1965 and the one on the right is 1963 http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ).

This 06A Baltimore built Super Sport has 31,800 original miles and still wears its original lacquer paint on its original sheet metal. It retains its original engine, transmission, and rear axle. The trunk and interior are original. The exhaust pipes and mufflers are also original to this car. Original documentation includes the Protect-O-Plate, dealer invoice, dealer order form, dealer sales receipt, initial title, cancelled check for original purchase, two IBM trim cards, first state registration, sales brochure, first and second vehicle safety inspection certificates, first license plates, keys, multiple photographs and slides, time slips, drag racing trophies, and various other paperwork. Wayne has an extensive collection of over 300 original slides of his old ride. His father was a serious amateur photographer and saw the benefit of shooting most of his pictures with slide film and using a decent camera. For the day, the resolution of slide negatives was superior to standard photograph negatives. Standby for more vintage photos within the next couple months as Wayne continues to sift through his collection. One of them is a picture of his salesman, Hoover Potter, shaking his hand while handing him the keys on the day he took delivery of his new Chevelle.

When I asked Wayne what his fondest memory of his car was (thanks for the suggestion Bruce http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif ), he had two answers. The first answer, he said while laughing, had to do with the “fun” he had with his wife http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif The second answer was the pride he took in snagging the “Class Winner” trophy at New London in a hard fought victory with his wife and cousin cheering him on.

My plans for the Chevelle are to correct some minor deficiencies (fasteners, finishes, & parts) and remove and restore the exhaust system (mufflers are in nice condition, but pipes were coated with a preservative and need some work). I will be returning the SS to its day-two “as raced” look by adding period correct Hedman headers, 15” Cragar S/Ss up front, and out back 8 x 15” steelies with M&H racing slicks. If anyone has a lead on any of these items I would appreciate it.

I’ve also included a short video with sound (below) to give you an idea of what an L78 with an original exhaust system sounds like: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/mockingbird812/th_P1010996.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v697/mockingbird812/?action=view&current=P1010996.flv)

Sam,

What a time capsule. You are a very luck man. Great story, and to get to talk with the original owner and get the history 1st hand to boot. All of the vintage photos. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

The black with red interior combination is stunning, but the red stripe just sets it off. Congradulations!!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

I do believe that if I pulled up next to you at a light and heard that exhaust, I would think twice. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Wayne has been the icing on the cake in owning this Chevelle. What a spirited, passionate fellow he is. He made the "research" experience a complete pleasure. I feel fortunate to be included on his joke/political commentary email distribution list. Wayne is a patriot and just plain good American. He remembers the details of his days with his trusty L78 with vivid detail and just loves to recount his street and race track encounters. His SS was last registered for the road in VA in 1977 with just under 32,000 miles.

Thanks for all the kind comments. I feel fortunate to have this beast in my garage. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/youguysrock.gif

Darren - thank you. I am a student of the Xplantdad School of Photography (Phoenix Campus). My photo shoot was in a Pecan Grove near my home and I used an SLR with real live film, but had it developed to digital CD images. I found the colors to be much richer. You can down load hi res shots from my webshots links (I hope they work). Once you are viewing a picture, just click on "full size" and down load this. If this does not work just p.m. me and I'll forward bigguns' to you.

Thanks to the folks who provided the good comments on the art-of-an-interview thread a couple months ago. This really helped.

Absolutely beyond words! Gorgeous car and the story behind it and the history is what makes me enjoy this site more with every visit. Congrats on finding it and preserving the history along with sharing the original owner memories and pictures.

How about bringing it out in "Day 2" trim to Vettefest and being a part of our sYc L-78 Showcase November 17-18?

I know the idea of being in Chicago in November instead of AZ may be less then thrilling, but maybe Dave and Charlie can tell you how much fun it can be visiting (and eating) with some great people at the show!

Thanks go out to Bruce too, for another awesome addition to the site.

I know the idea of being in Chicago in November instead of AZ may be less then thrilling, but maybe Dave and Charlie can tell you how much fun it can be visiting (and eating) with some great people at the show!

Thanks go out to Bruce too, for another awesome addition to the site.

BA,

Sounds like a hoot. I have no problem with cold climes, good food, and new friends. I visited Chicago for the 1st time in March (interviewing another original owner) and absolutely loved it. Will be starting a new job in October and may be a challenge to get off. But you have my attention.

Thanks http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

As I've seen this car and coveted it since I first saw it at the Pavillions about 5 yrs ago, I can tell you it is one of, if not the best 69 L-78 Chevelles in existance, period, dot, end of story. I could be biased though since my first car was a triple black 69 Chevelle, bench seat, 4spd. As for all you guys offering to buy it, get in line, I have first dibs. I told Sam right after he got it that I want to own it someday, If I am ever lucky enough to get my grubby hands on it, it will be for sale only after I am long gone!! Congrats Sam on a awesome, awesome Supercar, glad you grabbed it when it popped up for sale. Great pictures by the way, as usual. I need to get a copy when I get out there.

Hey Lee,

How's the fleet? Thanks for the comments. Yeah, even a blind pig will find a truffle once in awhile. I feel truly fortunate to be the caretaker of this Chevrolet. The layers of stories with this car are so rich and interesting and they are known because of the terrific attitude and enthusiasm of Wayne.

Some of you keen observers will have noticed that this car has front and rear bumper guards on the car. They don't appear on the order form or dealer invoice, but they have been on the car since Wayne brought it home. Wayne was having breakfast at this parent's home one morning while he was waiting for his car to be delivered (13 long weeks). He was lamenting that his car just NEEDED the bumper guards to set off the car "just right". Well his Mom and Dad surprised Wayne by contacting the dealership and ensuring that the guards were on the car as a surprise to Wayne. Things like that and the remote mirror are contrary to a street/drag racing brute, but make this car all the more interesting to me.

Man, that is some good stuff. The original owner of my 69 SS said she had pictures of it new with her kids by the car, but has yet to be able to find them. Her mother (the orignal owner) may have tossed them in her old age.

My car is a near twin to Sam's but with the 325 hp engine and 4 speed trans. No race history, it was Mabel Summerlin's grocery/church car.

Wayne shot this on Saturday, 14 June, the day after delivery. Good shot of the "Wide Treads" at all 4 corners. I asked Wayne the other night about the "Wickline" license plate frame and he doesn't even remember it. I'm sure that was one of the 1st things to go. Probably not cool enuff for a 20 y.o. dude to be advertising for some Chevy dealership. Wayne is going to check w/ some of the local salvage yards to see if he can track one down.

Just got my July '08 Hemmings Muscle Machines with Sam's '69 L78 on the cover with a nice 6 page write up by Sam with many of the pics seen here. (Great now EVERYBODY will know about my favorite Chevelle.....I'll never own it at this rate...)

The issues a keeper. Right after Sam's car is the most amazing low mile '67 GS400 I've ever seen (under 10K miles, black on YELLOW, 4 speed, wow). Resto Profile is of a nice 440-6 4sp Superbird, and even the late model modified is an '84 Monte SS with an L98 TPI engine and a t56 manual trans, everything looking factory.

Good job, Sam. Everybody else go and get yourselves a copy.

Thanks Dude! You da man and.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/BruceRocks.gif . I was telling Bruce tonight that the cover photo was actually shot at night. Those of you that know Don Spiro's photography work, know what an artist he is. He thinks outside the box. He told me he wanted to do something different - shooting a black car at night is definitely different http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif ! The shot had a 30 second exposure (my son Tyler was working the camera's shutter) while Don was racing completely around the Chevelle with a special strobe light holding it high then low while flashing it intermittently. He actually passed in front of the camera on 2 occasions. I think it turned out quite well. The editor went ga-ga over it and was quite excited.

Speaking of Tyler, I told Terry McGean (editor) that my son took the shot of Wayne and I and Terry gave Tyler credit for the shot.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif (one proud pappy! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif )

Thanks Verne - kind of you to say.

I do want to make sure the record is straight on one account. I have still not seen the entire magazine yet, but it appears the editor may have lumped my car in under the "unrestored" category, i.e. a theme of the magazine as per the title of the cover. Is that correct (maybe the contents page reveals this)? If so, I would characterize that as using poetic license. If I were selling the car, I would use stronger language. Although many portions of the car ARE unrestored (paint, interior, trunk, etc.) I would NOT consider my car unrestored as a whole - engine bay and front suspension have been fluffed. As a writer (I use the term loosely) you do not always have complete control over the final product. The editor has unbelievable constraints and as Terry told me he must serve numerous superiors. But I am learning this fascinating trade which has been an enjoyable process thus far. I am completely appreciative of the editor's confidence in me at trying this challenging trade - so, do not construe this as looking a gift-horse in the mouth. It's all good. There are a few minor errors, but essentially the car is depicted as I intended and I hope that I conveyed the interesting story beyond the metal, rubber, & vinyl of the car itself. To me, this is where it is really at!

I'm done blabbing now. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This was taken at New London Dragway with Wayne and his wife Delaine. She is holding the Class Win trophy that now has the 2 nickels glued to the top that his cousin, Lisa gave him for good luck.

I have still not seen the entire magazine yet, but it appears the editor may have lumped my car in under the "unrestored" category, i.e. a theme of the magazine as per the title of the cover. Is that correct (maybe the contents page reveals this)?

[/ QUOTE ]

Sam,

Yes, your assumption is correct. Directly above the picture of your car is the word "UNRESTORED" in large font, and then just below it, is "3 Factory Original Muscle Cars". I doubt that anyone here (at least anyone who knows you reasonably well) thinks you're trying to pawn it off as something it's not. We all know you have to take what you read in any car magazines with a grain of salt. The car is what it is....what's truly priceless is the relationship you've been able to establish with the original owner, and all the memories (photographic and otherwise) that he's eagerly provided for you to share http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

When I was going thru each of Wayne's old photos with him, he was careful to identify each person in the photo and tell me about them a bit. He was very proud of the young lad in the next photo helping him hook up the tow tabs. Jamie is his name and he used to come over to Wayne's a bunch to see what he was up to. Wayne always remembered he would show up on a dirt bike eager to help out. Wayne enjoyed his company and recalled that young Jamie was a quick study. Today Dr. James McManaway is a noted Pediatric Opthamologist in Hershey, PA.

I heard from Wayne (original owner) the other day. Lately he's been doing some house cleaning and has come across some interesting things "belonging" to his old Chevelle. I don't have the other items just yet, but will post when they arrive. The below item, of course, is the warranty pamphlet for the Chevelle and I noticed that the selling dealership, Wickline, info was printed in the open space at the bottom. Curious if this was done locally (looks very professional) or would GM have done this for their dealers?

You may have remembered me making a post about asking Wayne about the "Wickline" plate frame about a year ago (see 1st 2 photos below). Hey Rich, looking closely at my photos taken on the day after car was delivered, I think they look like the non-rolled tips. Also, this is an 06A built car and believe the problems with the rolled tips retaining moisture had been determined by June and therefore I think had already been pulled from production lines.

Dapper Wayne was dressed to the nines on his wedding day doing a great impression (American version) of the infamous James Bond with his faithful (and capable) steed by his side. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bill - Wayne's Dad recommended the remote control mirror as a safety feature. Wayne's Dad is as influential in his life today as he was back in the 60s. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif Its an odd option for a hi-po Chevy. How many solid lifter cars out there had remote controlled mirrors? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Another important influence on Wayne's life back then (today too) is his little sister (14 yr difference) Rosemary. She attended most of his races and even wrote about him in her school reports. Wayne doted over her like big brothers do and they have always been real close. Wayne asked Rosemary to be the flower girl on his big day... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Interesting Sam. No overspray on the intake and crossover hose that I can see. I've got a picture of a friend's 69 Baltimore L78 Chevelle shortly after he bought it which shows the same scenario (A.I.R. also gone).

I made my way back to AZ this past week as we were having one of the daughters of our German friends stay with us. Toward the end of her visit, 3 of her college mates joined us as well. They are all 3rd year students in Bio-Engineering and were sharp as a whip and very engaging. One of the fellows enjoys photography and is quite good at it. He is also a car freak! He really liked our black SS and asked to shoot it once we got back from a desert tour at the end of the day. I had mentioned that the HMM cover shot was done with old strobes in order to illuminate the car after sunset. Well this kid is quite innovative so he removed his camera's flash unit and ran around the car flashing it off with a 50+ second exposure and the results were quite interesting.... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/laugh.gif

Years & years of open headers, standing at the starting line of a dragstrip between Fuel burning dragsters, listening to the demonic Rock 'n Roll at insane decibel levels, chain saws, screaming wives & kids, .....you get the point. Like many of us who NEVER wore hearing protection because WE WERE TOO MANLY for such SENSELESS things!!!!!, ..... I suffer from Tinnitus. (That's the constant ringing in your ears that will NEVER go away.) Because of that, I sleep with a TV, radio, etc. on just to generate 'white noise' so the ringing doesn't push me over the edge. (Yes, I know: I'm painfully close anyway!)
