Here's a photo of my best high school buddy's car in '68. It's a real L-78 SS. Originally it had a black vinyl roof but it was removed. Pure coincidence that the plate read RUR-425. How cool! He joined the Navy after graduation and drove it to Long Beach, CA, then sold it. I can only imagine driving that thing across the country with 4.11s. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/worship.gif

I went from Minneapolis to Indianapolis in 1983 for Super Chevy Sunday in my 68 SS427 Impala and let me tell you, it was NO picnic. If I recall correctly it was running about 3500 RPM at about 55 mph. Triple black car, 4.11's and no air while 101 degrees out. Yuck!

Yep, the new L78 was available w/ the big cars as well as the '65 'Vettes.
Same as the '65 'Vettes too, they were first rated @ 425HP later changed to 375Hp by rating HP at a different rev.
I've read about 4-door '65 L78's being produced too also of guys buying cars to get the motor then reselling w/ SB power etc.
And whether 425 or 375 HP, L78's were different engines than the hydraulic lifter L37 375HP '65 Malibu Z16s.
'65 was a great year for engine options as 409's were available up to the mid Feb. intro of the new Mk. 1V's.
We got the W-motors a little longer up here in Canada including w/ our Chevy powered Pontiacs also, even though THE absolute last factory installed 409 VIN has yet to be confirmed...it was a Canadian Pontiac!

That is soo cool! Wonder how many of them were produced?
Thanks for the info on this...I knew of the 409 Impala's but never of the L78. So they made 325/375 396 HP only and the 409 that was 335 right?

Dave,
In '65, the 409 was either 340hp (hydraulic, small heads, Rochester) or 400hp (solid, big heads, Z-11 cam and an AFB)
340hp 2,086
400hp 742
L-78 396 1,838

Wow, that's awesome. It is so sad that we are losing all of our historical and memorable locations.
Considering it was decomm'd in 1980, it is amazing they haven't wanted to tear it down.
That is one of the most amazing structures I have ever seen for a RR bridge.
Thanks for the response and info. I love historical stuff like this. Hope locals fight to the death the day they want to tear it down.
Thanks Pete.

I "inherited" the family photos when my sister and I cleared out our childhood home. My dad was a shutter-bug, shooting exclusively on slide film. There must be thousands of slides in the box! Anyway, I recently bought a slide scanner and am learning to use it tonight. I processed 9 slides and here are three appropriate for this thread. I think these were shot in Florida in 1973.

Loving these. Please keep them coming.
Yes, slides are delicate as they are the actual film.
Heat and sunlight is the biggest killer.
I also have thousands of slides from my folks from the early 50's vacations they took, before kids.
But only a handful have cars. Most are mountains and locations.

Wow, pulling a travel trailer with a 6 banger 63 Bel Air? Probably not recommended by Chevrolet <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/blush.gif
Cool pictures, Rick.
My dad took tons of pictures, too, and also all in slide form. My next younger brother 'inherited' all our family's slides. There were quite a few cool car pictures in them since he took me to a number of car events back in the early to mid 60's.

Thanks Bill. My dad liked taking pics with family members standing in the middle of a scene. I skipped over quite a few labeled "Watkins Glen" but they were shot in some heavily wooded area with not much to see. He was not much into cars, having bought that strippo '63 Bel Air equipped with a 6 cylinder and 3 on he tree with no radio. Cool car, but it was HOT on those road trips! Then he bought that '69 Impala sport sedan with a 250 6 cylinder and three on the tree, but this car had an AM radio! Another hot one on road trips.

The Sherry Frontenac Hotel is still here. Doesn't look like much has changed in all the years. It is a great blast from the past. Stayed there many times.
Feels like I should be driving up in a mid 60's Caddy when I stay there.

Great pics, thanks for posting!
This series you posted is definitely from the 1964 World's Fair in NYC. Check out the Chrysler building in the background with the pentastar emblems for the roof segments! The giant Uniroyal tire ended up in Michigan after the show. Walt Disney was involved with the 1964 NY World's Fair, and in fact his dinosaurs were a huge hit. They ended up in Epcot Center as the popular Universe Of Energy ride.
Ford had an incredible display, including a skyway where real Ford cars were used in a ride that carted you around on a elevated platform. Millions of people rode the Ford ride during the World's Fair.

Yes, they did Tim. It's been through a few changes over the years. At one time it had a giant nail in it.
Here's what it looked like when they first brought it here... and with the nail:

When I transitioned from the assembly plant to engineering, the guy I replaced (he was retiring) had worked for Duntov.
Jim said you had to be careful in the building and out on the road system at the Chevy Engineering Center. If you heard something "rump" "rumping" around the track or in the hallway you'd better stand back because Duntov would run you over.

He also said that Duntov would walk through the engineering lab(s) and request an informal update (in a thick accent): "How arrrr yu du-ing?"
After listening quietly and attentively while they explained all the technical attributes of whatever they were working on he would dismiss them, saying "...do da best you cahn...".
I have taken to saying that, now, as I walk away (which normally results in having to tell the whole story as relayed here).

----A long time ago the NCRS national meet was in Mass. north of Boston. Duntov had been invited as a guest speaker for the weekend. The host hotel was on top of a hill with a winding road from the show field up to it. Zora was given a gas powered golf cart to get around, but he deemed it too slow. Next thing we knew he had taken it apart and modified it. The thing halled ass after that and all weekend Zora could be found screaming up and down that road to the hotel.......Bill S

Back in the day when most of those cars had steel dashes and they just hosed out the interior and moved along, ugh.
When I made my sister laugh so hard, she puked hotdogs out her nose @ the Drive-In,Dad drove to the carwash and made me hose her & the back seat of the station wagon out...Good times. :)

Shaun, you are welcome.:beers:
Scanning those pics was amazing. Lots of things to look at in each picture. Sometimes you have to look a few times to see parts that you missed seeing the first time around.

WOW, those pics are awesome, thanks for posting them up!
They remind me of my dad (born 1932) who did body work since he was 13 in the back alley of his house in Mt Oliver, Pittsburgh. He passed in 2000 from Emphysema/COPD/Lung Cancer, primarily from painting w/o a respirator, breathing in all that sanding dust and smoking. He was an amazing body man and painter who had "the touch" and made panels as straight as they could be. I remember being down in the garage in the late 60's and 70's and seeing him ply his trade as a skilled tradesman, even occasionally pulling out the lead and working with that when the situation called for it. He was a great guy and I really miss him. Thanks again for putting those up and taking me down memory lane.

Some of those are pretty gruesome scenes
It's also interesting to see what passed for an "ambulance" in much of America back in the 1950's thru mid 1960's......usually just a station wagon or sedan delivery with a siren, gumball on the roof, and a stretcher, first aid kit, and oxygen tank in the back :eek2: We've come a long way.
Love all the before-and-after pictures.....that shop was obviously - and rightfully - proud of their work. Thanks for posting, Shaun!

So true but also with a long way to go. Look what they use over in England. They can actually perform triage and surgery on the street at the scene of an accident if warranted. Pretty cool stuff and saves a lot of lives that otherwise would not have lived to get to the hospital.
