Something kinda cool happened since I posted those photos of Frank. I meet his grandson Scott! (he came into my store). Unfortunately, Scott never got to know his Grandfather Frank as he was in a fatal accident about 7 years after that photo was taken. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif He told me that he found his wedding ring (you can see it in the photo above ^) while cleaning out his aunt's house (she recently passed away) and that he was considering having it sized so that he could wear it. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/worship.gif

I asked for his e-mail address so I could send him some pics of his grandfather. One of the pics I sent was this one of his Grandma & Grandpa:

How rare they are indeed! I am just coming up to 30. But I can remember about four years ago doing some work for a lady in California, she was about age sixty and she was still a knock-out!

Girls of 20 would kill for her body. A VERY attractive woman she was. I would love to have seen pics of her from back in the day!

Hands-down, hottest older woman I have ever seen in my life.

Point of fact, my very attractive 22 yr old girlfriend at the time was irritated and jealous that I was working for her.

Also, cool fact about the playmates getting new pink cars. I didnt know that one. Wonder when it stopped.

Regarding the Playboy pink cars; I remember seeing a pink 1968 Shelby convertible (can't recall if it was a GT500 or GT350) that also had Cragar GT wheel that had the centers painted pink. Does anyone know if Playboy awarded a '68 Shelby convertible to the Playmate for that year?

I wonder where all these Playmate cars are now.

They were probably repainted to their original colors as shown on the tag or build sheet. I wouldn't have the guts to have a pink car, no matter what the history! :-))

the KG is a "staged" picture ... he borrowed some angel hair for smoke for the rear tires ... and painted twin "rubber" strips as well ... he owns an E39 M3 now, and is still active in autocrossing

the top photo was a 50's night at General Motors Institute in Flint MI, taken in the driveway of the house we had rented across from campus, ~ 1973

68 302 Z28 (MO) engine in the 56 210 with a 62 Corvette Rochester FI on it ... I just ran across those plates after all those years ... NVY 302 ... my neighbor worked at a Secretary of State branch and got them for me, pseudo "personalized plates ... e<span style="font-weight: bold">NVY</span> my <span style="font-weight: bold">302</span> ...

I'm betting it's an early hand operated brake control. I saw a few of those before Hurst came up with the line lock. Dick Brannan (local to South Bend) was smarter than most and rigged up a Studebaker "Hill Holder" solenoid on his 63 Ford light weight car, and connected it to the clutch pedal. Don't wanna be rolling out of the staging beams you know.

Well, 'ya beat me to the punch Verne! I had a suspicion that was the Frank Sander '63 Z-11 in that interior shot. I can recall when that car was discovered back in the Eighties with only 2200 miles on the odometer! I think it was Spurlock who was able to acquire it back then. That particular car also qualified 2nd at the 1963 AHRA Winternationals at Beeline with 11.93 @ 119 MPH. That was a fast Z-11, especially so early in the season!

correct, one car on the course at a time trying for the best time

penalties for hitting cones (the course markers)

they are called autox, autocross, Solo, Solo 2, Solo II, slalom, etc

a timed event with no fender " rubbin' "

you turn right and left, then right, maybe left again, etc

no straight stuff per se, some straights, but basically a miniature road course timed event

yes, for a few years ,,,, it was a blast, took my 73 Z28 there later (the 70 was in paint prison) and beat John Heinricy who drove up from the GM DPG in a "new" Corvette (one of the last years of the C3's). I think it one of the 1st few Solo events John attended. One of the events was sponsored by the Four Cylinder Club of Arizona, another I think by the Cactus Corvair Club, not sure if the SCCA ever ran one

Avenue of the Fountains was one of the streets, then it turned North (?)

can't remember the exact streets it used, it was West of the Fountain and West of the small business area that is there today

It's a flipper for sure and looking closely you can see the Moon style tank also cool how the arrow sign pointing to it says Today's Special!.

The side stripe looks kind've Harrel'ish also C-Pillar maybe 67-69 Camaro or '70 & up Cuda/Challenger but even though it looks like quad lamps it's not a '69 Mustang is it also the picture too early to be a '70 Chevelle or Challenger?.

Does the '62 'Vette at the left have big brake dog dish caps also the '65 Coupe a few down have a BB hood?.

Where is this?.
It's not but the corner location looks similar to the setup at Canada's Central Chev Hi-Performance Ctr..

Love the clean looking black '59 BelAir in front of the '56 Ford stake truck sitting behind the '59 and '62 Pontiac!.

Also what's the car in the earlier picture partially torn in the pits and Scarab/Lotus-11 looking...is it a Lister?.

Once in a while we find stuff in our archives that just blows us away but was never printed in the magazine. That's what we've got here, a photo by Pat Broiler from November 1968 revealing High Performance Used Cars at 500 S. Brand in Glendale, California. It was photographed for the now-defunct HOT ROD Industry News magazine, the publication that supported the organization that is now the SEMA show.

This makes us long for those old days. It's hard to believe that a world existed where a used car lot was dedicated to nothing but cheap, legit musclecars. The entire proof sheet this photo came from reveals cars such as a Hemi '67 Coronet, a '67 GTO, a GS Buick, a handful of midyear Vettes, a '40 Ford coupe, and a wicked straight-axle early Mustang. Lots of the cars have the vintage nose-high stance. Steve Bovan's Blair's Speed Shop Camaro Funny Car was also on the lot that day, though we suspect it was a display piece and not for sale. Check out the signs that advertise "Super Stock" GTOs, Corvettes, Chevelles, Mopars, Camaros, and Stingrays.

Thinking about how times have changed, consider the relatively new cars that could be sold at a performance-themed lot today. Corvettes, Vipers, Mustangs, perhaps some five-year-old Camaros and Firebirds, a Trailblazer SS-but what else?

The last time we drove past the location of this old photo, it was still a car lot, but loaded with minivans and SUVs. We doubt anyone will relish those cars or those memories 40 years from now. -David Freiburger

In Warminster pa, right down the street from the old Hurst plant (suburb of Philly) There was a used car lot that only carried hi performance cars too. It was called paul Olds. This was back in the mid 70's.. I knew friends who bought a white LS6 70 SS Chevelle and another who bought a 70 Mack 1 and another kid who bought a 70 Orbit orange RAIV Judge there. Anyone remember it? Im sure Don White does. He even knows the 70 Judge owners back then:)

I'm going to say that's Oxnard AFB in SoCal, now Camarillo Airport. California Air National Guard F-86Ls in the foreground and Air Defense Command F-106s in the background. The 106s were based there and the 86Ls were probably visiting from their home base at Ontario, out near Pomona. c1964.

re photos#432079 photo #7 on page 16. It is nice to see my town Calgary, Alberta, Canada on this wonderful site. This photo is of the 56 Calgary Stampede Parade. Everything in this photo except the large building to the right of the Olds is long gone That is the Palliser Hotel, To the left of the Olds now stands the new City Hall and a senior citizens building. I bought the car new in March 1970 at Baldwin Chevrolet. When the salesman/owner (Ed Simone)pulled the paperwork on the car he found that it was an ordered car that was sent up to Motion for headers, carb reject, igition re-curve and "custom" spark plug wires, but apparently the original deal fell through and the car was never delivered. Well I bought it that day for $3208, out the door. The picture I posted was taken in 1974, the day I sold the car when we bought our first house! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif
I sold it for $6000 and figured I did real good on the deal. BTW, car had 4300 miles on it when sold...

Naw..I began looking for the car the early 80's with hopes of buying it back, but stuck out. NY DMV purged old license plates to cross reference to VIN and Baldwin Chev was long gone..could't believe that I didn't have anything left with a VIN on it.
..what an idiot... Even checked with Joel, but work order only referenced dlr veh stock #...like I said, what an idiot. hey..the car I sold for the Z was no slouch either...black 68SS 396/375.

Not all that much has changes in the circa '65 Sunset Beach shot, the Douglas Gas station is now a used/consignment car lot, the building to the right is a Taco Surf, and Turc's Bar to the left is exactly the same. The water tower in the background was converted into a home 20 - 30 years ago, and has been pretty much on the real estate market perpetually since.

There is a small motel on that side down the street next to an Italian restaurant. There are two others going north on the opposite side of the road closer to the bridge going over Anaheim Bay where the Navy has a large pier. Where this photo was taken from has changed significantly. It is called Peter's Landing with condos, shops, and a Starbuck's where the locals have small car shows on weekends.

Took this a few minutes ago, for comparison purposes, since you remember the tower. The signs on the tower say "Vacation Rental" and "For Lease or Rent." I also took shots of the other two Sunset Beach scenes if anyone is interested.

You are correct, sir. That place is always crowded. This thread really brings back memories. On 165, this one almost got by me, though, also in Sunset by the Post Office. The only way I picked up on it was the New Englang Lobster sign. Remember that place up close to Warner? They used to bring in New England seafood weekly. I always used to wonder "why?"

It has parking underneath and fronts on both PCH and the road between PCH and the Pacific. Not the greatest place, but clean and was always cheap. Just cant remember the name. Whats the name of that restaurant right close to the tower that had the killer breakfasts??? Woodies, maybe???.......Bill S

Yes the restaurant is "Woody's." I thought you were talking about the "Sanatra Motel (or Inn)" but it does not have underground parking. The Ramada at the corner of Warner does. Was there a Jack in the Box next to it, car wash on the other side?

The Camaro is one we had. Dale Jarret bought one of them. We lived in Conover NC at the time. The young man is my dad in Yazoo City Miss leaving for Detroit to train.
The young lady on the ss impala is my sister inlaw. The one picture has my dad & mom in it and the little kids is me and one of my 5 brother's.

I just got this sent to me. It's a buddy of mine who in 1976 totaled his 1973 SS Nova with 4 other friends in it. He said he hit an embankment at about 100MPH backwards. All survived.

Dog, you've got to tell us what is going on here. That's the tail of a modified B-29, I'll guess it's a refueling tanker modification c1952-54 (note how the tail gunner's position has been faired-over and the pointed cone-shaped cap in place of the tail guns). Looks like Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque. So who is the guy in civvies? He's acting as a fire guard, probably during engine start. Maybe he's a civilian employee working at the base and the '29 is a test/modification airplane.

I used to do that trick with rolling slow in 1st gear and going on and off the throttle and stabbing it in rythm to get the front und up. Kinda like the guys doing it with hydraulics.

You'll need some 4 series gears out back.

I used to do this with my old 55 Chevy as well. A big block 4 spd with 4:88 gears. You could get it to hop a couple of times with worn out front shocks, and then get about a foot of air underneath. Good times, but I remember how bad the rest of the car was too, Brakes suspension, and everything else came second to the drivetrain. I wouldn't roll 10 feet in that car now if it was still around.

This is a great thread and spent hours looking through it. Here is a pic of my dads '64 GTO convertible. The pic was taken in 1978. The 2nd pic was my dads '57 Pontiac Chieftan. Though you can't see it in the pic... the car has a flame job.

Thanks for the welcoming and the compliments. I wish my dad would've kept it. The car was sold right around the time the picture was taken. I believe he sold it for $1800 in 1978.... He only paid $750 for it in '76. I remember doing 110 with the top down.... Its stuff like that that got me hooked on cars.

My guess would be Central Park in New York; I beleive the Dakota where he lived was very close by.

That is correct, the Dakota, built in the late 1800's stands alone on Central Park West in this photo...(Keeping in the "Old Street Theme")

This was a somewhat famous shot of The Beatles on their first trip (Feb 1964) to New York. They had never been to America before (well, George had, just to visit his sister, before they were famous), and New York just overwhelmed them. They were escorted around as photographers snapped hundreds of pictures.

No one (especially John) in 1964 could have foreseen a time when Lennon would settle in New York years later, and in this photo you can see the exact location where he would live (and tragically die) in 1980.

Note: Harrison was absent from these photo shoots, because he had a severe case of the flu. So severe in fact that they didn't think he would be able to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show. Sullivan said that if Harrison didn't play, Ed himself would put on a Beatles wig and take his place. Interesting when you see the original 1964 TV broadcast, as George looks fine, but in fact he was deathly ill.
