this shot is from my 1st "solo" visit to California (without parents) in 1974. We were visiting a friends brother stationed in Sacramento and bought the 63 Split window for $1800.

It had all the day 2 stuff on it, black side pipes, WIDE Ansen sprints with corresponding wide bias plies and flares

We did the coast Highway down to LA and traded the wide Sprints for a set of 5 63 knockoffs with Michelin radials that we found on a guy's 69 SS396 El Camino ... poor guy, the rear tires we traded him wouldn't fit under the rear wheel wells and his air shocks were not functioning ... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

That made the Corvette look stupid with the wide flares and skinny knock-offs, but we knew the value of original parts over day 2 stuff way back then ...

the car DROVE way better with the OEM sized tires/wheels though

was digging through some old pictures and found a couple of gems:

My 1st 1969 Camaro, taken in 1974 I think. It has the NVY 302 plates on it from my 56 Chevy. 307, Turbohydromatic, disc brakes, positraction, F-41 suspension &amp; factory air (the car was &quot;cloned&quot; into a Z28 within 6 months after I sold it. One of those RARE factory air automatic 69 Z/28's).

Yeah, I added the Corvette Rally wheels with the 67 centers ...

I stopped counting but that was the 1st of ~80 69 Camaros I have owned over the years ...

The 1956 Chevy Delray, taken in 73 or 74. This is overlooking northern Lake Michigan in the background and I think it is Manitou island out there.

Engine: stock 302 from a 68 Z28 with a 62 Corvette FI on it. Note the &quot;correct&quot; fuel filter ... and the &quot;correct&quot; placement of the fender emblems on the prior picture.

We took it to the 1st Bloomington (2nd?) Corvette show:

and everybody wanted to know where it came from. (I replaced the plenum with an early 57 when we were there). I told everyone it was Zora's West Coast press car and was the prototype for the 57 Fuel Injection (I had a correct air cleaner on it as well). People noticed the one piece bumpers and the CA frame and bought the &quot;story&quot;. We had it in the swap area and were selling parts as I recall.

We saw several on Van Nuys and spoke with one of the owners of one and he showed us how the springs were cut and the &quot;Lincoln hats&quot; were used with the hydraulics to raise and lower the cars ... all were Impalas back then (and that 66 Caprice). This took place in a parking lot on VNB. People cruised and they parked.

We understood from him that is wasn't &quot;new&quot; it had been going on for some time apparently, how long would be hard to tell.

The world and Van Nuys Blvd was a different place back then ...

There was no machismo &quot;turf&quot; / gang bs, just all types of car people showing their cars and cruising ...

There were the low riders, the hot rods, street machines / muscle cars, the custom vans (wrassle castles) and the jacked up off road trucks, quite a spectrum of interests

Ain't that the truth <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif And that reminds me...the first time I went to Los Angeles was in 1980. My brother-in-law and I went to Van Nuys Blvd for the cruising scene - and I have a <span style="text-decoration: underline">LOT</span> of pictures from that night. I'll have to scan them and post here some time....

Here's some pictures of my Dad's first new car 1965 Impala taken in 1966. He bought the car and less that a year later got drafted, had to sell it. The Pontiac I beleive is a 1966 picture taken in 1968 right after he got out of the Army.

I've seen a couple of versions of 57 Chevy ambulances

I've been following this thread for quite a while. Thanks to everyone who has posted! Figured it was time for me to share one from my family history.

Here's my Mom's brand new 71 Satellite next to the 64 Fairlane it replaced. That's my Dad's 68 Dodge A-108 in the background. According to the August 1971 date, this would have been right around the time frame I was conceived. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif

Also, found this video recently. Looks to be filmed possibly in the fall of 1959 (based on the load of brand new 1960 Caddies seen). Really a cool period film, produced by the Iowa DOT.

I remember traveling as a kid from NY down to NC every summer and Christmas to visit relatives and that's the way it was - two lane roads, getting stuck on the hills behind the semi's and endless town after town!

Rice Holman was not connected to Holman Moody. My 68.5 CJ Mustang came from Rice Holman and I wish they were affiliated but no dice.

Looks like that's a standard issue passenger car license plate, so it's probably not a highway patrol car. Whatever it is (67 Dodge Coronet maybe???) that would definitely fit the description of a &quot;bad wreck&quot;.

Looks like a 68 Plymouth Fury 4 door to me and looks to be the stock bumper guards with the rubbers torn loose. Also missing the center trunk trim. Texas Highway Patrol did use the 68 Plymouth Fury's but these plates are dated 72 so not sure. Must have been one hell of a crash as they even wiped out a shed or some other building.

maybe it was a retired Highway Patrol Car that someone bought at auction then got way over their head in ... it also looks like a chrome ball from a whip antenna on the rh side of the deck lid ... not sure though

Wow. Awsome tread. I was born in 1971,so a lot of this is before my time. It is funny how when you are a kid the people in pics from the &quot;olden dayz&quot; seem like they might as well be from another planet,they dont look anything like people you know. The older you get the more you find that the poeple of the olden dayz look just like the people of today just with funny haircuts and clothes.

I think its around page 181,that chick with the monster hair. I would soooo like to have my way with her,and she would need to have the big hair when I did it too. There are lots of other hotties too. I wouldnt throw the chick tuning the carbs out of bed either.

I wonder if the nerdy looking guy with the blue GT500 ragtop knew that he had a goldmine there. If he stashed that car back then he could have had an investment that exceeded any investment in history by 100's of percent. Did some convertables like that go for over 500K at auction. A survivor would be off the charts.

I recognize that street! It is downtown New Haven, Connecticut. The New Haven Green is on the left. It is the corner of Church and Chapel Streets. My Dad was a surgeon and had his office a couple blocks to the left of the photo, on Church Street South. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

The photo is circa 1971, judging from the lime green Vega next to the Pontiac station wagon, the CT Transit buses...It's 3:55 PM, according to the Second National Bank of New Haven sign. There is one in the Gilmore Museum in Kalamazoo, MI. I have an AMT model of that car and have had a fascination with them ever since I first discovered them and have collected lots of literature on them.

That's the Chrysler Turbine car from 63 - 64. I remember bugging my dad to take me the the Chrysler dealer when they brought one in. Sounded like a jet!

you can buy inexpensive scanners that accomodate photos and slides for less than $100 dollars. It is worth it. slides are generally much higher resolution than photos, so you can get some real clear hi res photo scans out of them. Many of my original blk/red L78 chevelle digital photos came from original slides. Here is one (check out the cars waiting: some nice Camaros and possibly a S/S Dart...

My best Hi-school buddy bought this slightly &quot;Day-2'd&quot; original '65 SS L-78 locally. Ivy Green, black interior, originally a black vinyl roof (removed), 4-spd 4.11s. Nobody could catch that car. Photographed in my parents driveway Christmas 1969. It was just coincidence that the plate was &quot;RUR 425&quot;. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/burnout.gif

We changed the Muncie in that car that winter in his back yard, outside, on the ground, 20deg, wind blowing. We ran the motor to keep us warm while we unbolted everything. Seemed like the right thing to do at the time. We loved that car. He joined the Navy and drove it to Long Beach, CA from NJ and sold it to another sailor. Never heard from again.

Sure would be nice to hear the story on this one. April 68 photo of a 67 Camaro. The thing is not even out of warranty yet and they stuck a flathead in it? Can't imagine it being better then the engine that came in the car????

I'm sure it was done to compete in a specific drag class that only allowed six cylinders, straight eights and flathead V-8's with stock production type heads. J/Gas and F/Modified Production were two such classes according to my 1969 NHRA rule book.

Looks like a fiberglas stinger hood on it too. No springs on the hood hinges.

This is Clarence Everett's one year old Camaro. He ran G or H/G. He was a Flathead legend in Oregon. Clarence bought the one year old SS396 as a recovered theft, pulled the engine and installed the Flathead. Clarence raced Bonneville and the drags for about 40 years, with all types of cars, mostly Flathead powered.
