Here goes. I have kept my mouth shut as long as I can. Thanks to Stefano I have just acquired probably the nicest survivor 70 Z28 there is. It has 1100 miles and has not been outside or driven since 1973. No drag car stories etc. Norman, the orig owner drove it sparingly for the first three years and had every intention of driving it for years. But one day a friend of his sister's opened a car door against it and gave it a door ding. He got so mad he parked it. It has been in a climate controlled room ever since. Never had the oil changed and Stefano says it still looks like new. Spare etc has never been out of the car. I don't think the air cleaner has ever been off. Bought new at Fencl-Tufo. Still has remnants of the window sticker on the window. Norman threw the sticker away because it was just going to be his car. He saved all the other paperwork though. Orig air in tires. Car has never even been waxed. I have a few pics but will get more. Jason Ayers and his friend Dan met with Stefano and Guarise at Normans place today and loaded it up in Jason's trailer. Jason is hauling it back to Iowa and was going to give it a light cleaning but after looking at the car he is not sure that it should be touched. If any of you know Jason, he is that kind of Anal about orig stuff and the guy I wanted primping it. It is that kind of car. Thanks Stefano, Jason, Mike, Dan... And Thanks Norman for preserving this great car. This is amazing. http://www.yenko.net/attachments/371161-tn_1970SurvivorZ28020.JPG

Congrats Charley!

For those viewing the pictures; the Z28 is very dusty. Inside and out. We didn't even clean any of the dust off.

However, It has regrettably had two bolts turned on it and that was for removal of the original battery years ago.

This is the Most Original Car I have ever seen! All three brothers confirmed, on video that all the tires still have original air in them.

The window crank knobs haven't even yellowed http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

The exhaust is just as incredible as the rest of the Z28.

Very few people had ever seen this Camaro.

Thanks to all who helped with this Mission.

Cool car, Chuckles http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Haven't done much research on it, but haven't seen many TH400 std. interior 70s.

Mine's the same (black console shift plate, no bright trim on the lower dash panels), but has the woodgrain around the dash gauges.

Makes me further lean to my belief that mine is a re-bodied 79 Berlinetta http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That door ding is the whole story behind this car being what it is 35 years later. To put it in perspective the war in Vietnam was still going on when it went into hibernation.

Charley, Your certainly not going to take any advice from me......

There are people at the www.nastyz28.com (http://www.nastyz28.com) site such as Jack Seymour, Jeff Betz, Mike Steitz, Dennis Thomas, Ben Arena, and many others who will very much be interested in all the details, pictures, etc

As I look at the lug nuts, center caps, trim rings, and many other pieces, I very much would like to see this in person.

You should consider having Jack Seymour take charge of "CLEANING" this car.

I hope in my lifetime, YOU unearth that 1970 L-78/T-400 I'm waiting for.

Sincerely, Chuck Sharin

With any luck it just might make its way to Carlisle this June and participate in our Vintage program http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif . -----Well,,,First, lets get going and spot in that nick!.........Just kidding, just kidding. Why am I not surprised that this Camaro is a Chicago area car??? From my ten years living in Chicagoland, as immersed in old cars as anyone could be, I seemed to notice a relatively high number of low-mile stored cars. I always attributed it to the ferocious winters not DOOR NICKS as in this case.
-----Congratulations Charlie and kudos to Bimbi as the guy who seems to unearth an inordinate amount of really neat rides.......Bill S

PLEASE NOTE the huge paint run on this rim

they seemed to be ALL like that (at least the originals I have seen and I have a NOS set of 4)

any 70 that has wheels that DO NOT have runs in them like this needs points DEDUCTED

what is the build date? I assume a Norwood car?

Also NOTE the rear stripes ending BEFORE the window trim ... :

Charley, great car, I need to see it.

I've got bad news, the 1970 license plate has my initials on it "TG" I'm afraid the car needs to be shipped to Austin immediately. I'll race you for pinks with my new '70 automatic Z.

Seriously, I love it and I'm learning lots from the engine pictures.

I think one of the Camaros Chris P has came from the same dealer.

Congrats Chill. I like to see the new interest in Un-Restored, original cars. Not only are they a rare piece of history that's been "preserved", they are the "benchmarks" for other cars to be restored by. Their intrinsic value for the future of the hobby is far greater than their current market value. Dollars can not quantify the true value of a car like that..... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

I talked briefly with Norman today. He worked in St Charles and was driving a 69 Impala Custom to work and would drive by Fencl-Tufo every day. He had driven a friends 70 Z and liked it. One4 day as he is driving home from work he sees this car on the lot and traded in his Impala on it. The inside rear view mirror is missng and Norman said it was like that when he got it and he never bothered to go back and bug them about it. There is a area behind the right rear wheel that has been painted on but Norman said he had never noticed it and he never painted on it. Jason said it is lacquer so we are guessing it was done at the factory or at the dealer before Norman bought it.

Incredible. I love the great stories behind these cars. When was it last run?

It was last run in 73. Norman and both his brothers stated that nobody has ever sat in the back seat and the passenger front was only sat in a couple times.

Norm read a magazine Article, in which we were mentioned. He contacted us, because of that article. He decided to sell the Camaro since his research had shown that an original owner Survivor Camaro, might be a desirable and collectable Camaro.

He had called several appraisal sources prior. We were also contaced about the Camaro from one of those companies.

His quote to me regarding selling the Camaro was that, he was getting older and that you never know what might happen to him or the Camaro. He wanted to make certain that it went to a good home.

Charley, are you going to remove the undercoating? If so, please describe the procedure to do this. I've got the same issue on a car and I'm gearing up for this as a winter project. I know that it is beautiful underneath the undercoating.

Charley Lillard
11-30-2008, 08:36 PM
No. The undercoating is part of the history of the car. No reason to tamper with it. If the car had been messed with I would do it but this thing deserves to be left alone.

I have removed undercoating on other cars by using white gas, kerosene, WD40 etc to soften it up and then a high pressure steam cleaner. Any petroleum distillate will soften it.

You may be able to get most of it out through the dipstick hole using a section of copper tubing which will fit through the dip stick hole... I would use the dipstick hole trick first then refill with oil, circulate fresh oil by pulling dist and priming (which will put it through the filter) then pull it out through the dip stick again... that should pretty well flush it.

I don't see any need to change the oil at this point. I spoke to Norman some more today. He is 69 years old and still lives in the house his Dad built in 1939. The car that gave the Z28 the door ding was a 66 4 door Chevelle that he bought for his Dad at Brigance. The girl that dinged it was Doris Yozul, not sure on the spelling.

If not them, did F-T undercoat it and what was the charge?

My car (LA built) is also heavily undercoated. I don't think it was Ziebart either. Perhaps they sprayed them all that were heading to the midwest? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Post factory applied undercoating for sure. A lot of cars had it done.

The owner of my car remembered the guy (by name) at the dealership who applied the undercoating. He praised him for what a great and thorough job. I plan on removing it, but 9 years have past and its still on the car...argh http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif!

Would it be unusual for an LA built car to be sold new in Chicago? Any rhyme or reason for some Chicago cars being Norwood cars and others being LA cars. Was it just supply and demand? Norwood is sure closer to Chicago than LA.

Same here D. I removed it a few years ago and the floor pans are perfect. Even the ends of the bolts holding the seat belts ae bright and shiny.
I think the charge to undercoat my car at the dealership was $23.50. And I agree, that looks like dealer applied undercoat.

I certainly thought so. My car was sold new in Decatur Illinois. Another LA built L78 70 Camaro was sold new at Fred Gibb's dealership. Not sure what the reasoning was behind it.

I don't think you can get a vintage car any closer to being new than this. -- it's remarkable that being kept in a garage for that length of time it has no critter or mice damage.

An LA built car; that explains the abundance of Build Sheets, if that was a Norwood car
the assembly line workers would probably have caught hell for that. I still don’t understand
the reason for putting them in LA built cars and not Norwood. I guess I am lucky that one
was left under my rug in my L78, Must have been a Monday morning built car. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
