I went up to the NMCA race at US131 Dragway in Martin MI two weekends ago so for a little change I thought I would post some pictures I took there. The top class in the NMCA is Extreme Pro Mod and this brand new 49 Merc made it's debut this weekend and won the event. It's powered by a Brad Anderson 521ci Hemi topped with a PSI screw blower and backed by a TH400. It went as fast as 3.73 @ 200 mph. That is a wrap and not paint, but it still looks pretty good. It was driven by Craig Sullivan.

Doesn’t Steve Morris build Tom Bailey’s engines(Sick Seconds)?

Yes, he builds Tom Bailey's engines. I think he usually rides along with Tom on Drag Week. His shop is just an hour or so from the track.

Here are a few pictures from the AACA show in Auburn IN in June. There was also a Buick gathering in conjunction with this show so about half the cars present were Buicks. I'm not really sure how the judging works at these shows or how thorough it is. It seems like every car present won an award.

This Tuxedo Black 63 Corvette is a fuel injected car that was sold new at Don Allen Chevrolet in New York, NY. K. Stowe had it at the show. The one thing I hate about parking lot shows is the lines get reflected on the sides of the cars.

As always, thanks MRays for posting up all of these killer pics.

I've never seen a red GSX, pretty cool, though I think I'd still prefer the white.

If you want to look at 1972 GSX statistics, go here:

http://www.buickgsx.com/1972%20GSX%20Original%20Information.pdf

It's 1 of 24 Stage 1 GSXs and only 2 of those had the 4-speed.

Also, 2 out of the 44 GSXs were red without a vinyl top.

----Len Immke Buick was at one time the largest Buick dealership in the world. He and his friend, Dave of Wendy's fame started Wendy's because Len wanted a good place for his employees to go to lunch close by. Len was a heavy investor and made a fortune on Wendy's stock as did many others he recommended the stock to. Len was an avid classic car collector, sometimes buying or selling a dozen cars at a time. I worked for an older classic Buick expert on Cape Cod for several summers that sold him, probably, 100's of cars and visited the Buick dealership many times!
----Oh, I have a question about GSX's. Were they all Stage 1's even though they didn't have the emblems?.....Bill S

The 70 GSX's came standard with a 455 and the 455 Stage 1 was optional. The 71 & 72 GSX's came standard with a 350 and the 455 and the 455 Stage 1 were optional. I don't know why the GSX's don't have Stage 1 emblems like the GS's do.

When this car appeared at Blooming Gold a couple of years ago the writeup on it said that the 32 year old original owner of the car was killed in a nearly head on collision he had while driving the car. I don't know what his name was. The car underwent a 10 year restoration to get it back to the condition it is in now. The car does retain it's original engine. I don't know how much of the body or anything else is original to the car.

For those of you with a nice collection of Musclecar Review magazines, this car appeared in a shootout of 4 in the late 1980s. It ran against a Daytona, 1968 GTO, and (I think) a CJ Mustang coupe. At the time it didn't have the Go Pack stripes, and I think it was originally a stripe-delete car with wheelcovers.

Hot Rod Drag Week took place last week. It started and ended at US131 Motorsports Park in Martin MI. Other stops were Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk OH, Lucas Oil Speedway in Indianapolis and Byron Dragway in Byron IL. Drag Week is made up of 18 classes based on engine and chassis/suspension combinations. The following are a few of my favorites from the event. The Unlimited Class and Overall Winner was Dave Schroeder in his brand new '19 Corvette built by Jerry Bickel. It is powered by a 872ci engine on NOS. One unique aspect of this car is it's Pro Stock style manifold that is mounted backwards to get cooler air off the windshield. He won with a 6.73 average @ 198 mph. His best pass was a 6.45 @ 209 on Day 5 at Martin. This was the only Pro Mod style car that competed.

Jason Sack's 69 Nova finished 2nd in the Unlimited Class and 3rd overall. This car is powered by a 427ci LSX engine with a single turbo. He had a 7.33 average with his best pass being a 7.29 on Day 5 in Martin.

09-21-2021, 01:20 AM
Alex Taylor's 55 210 finished 3rd in the Unlimited Class and 5th overall. This car is powered by a 525ci big block with twin turbos. This car had sat behind their shop for a number of years and was not in driving condition when they started the build. The front end and doors were painted to match the rest of the original body. This car averaged a 7.71 with a best pass of 7.63 at Byron.

Bryant Goldstone's 73 Javelin was in 2nd place in the Unlimited class and overall when he arrived at Martin on Day 5 with a 6.95 average with his best pass being a 6.78 @ 208 on Day 3 at Indy. Unfortunately on his 1st pass at Martin he got loose at half track, spun and hit the wall in the opposite lane with his frontend. He then slid on his roof through the traps. The car was pretty much destroyed, but fortunately he was not injured. This car is powered by a 572ci big block with twin turbos on methanol. He's been racing this car since at least the mid 90's and had just done a bunch of chassis work to it. At this point I'm not sure if the car is rebuildable or not.

Joe Barry's 56 210 was by far the fastest car in Ultimate Iron which is a class for tube frame cars with stock bodies. His best pass was a 7.00 @ 209 at Martin on Day 1. Unfortunately he broke his rear end at Indy and was unable to make a pass and had to take a 20.00 et for the day. He did get it back together and finished up the week with a 10.17 average which put him in 4th place in his class. This car weighs 3,800 lbs. and is powered by a 598ci big block with twin turbos. This was one of my favorite cars at Drag Week this year.

I was at Byron, IL for DW on Thursday. This Malibu launched HARD! I have to hand it to these people who compete in Drag Week.
It’s one thing to run these incredibly et/mph, but they are driving ~300 miles to and from these tracks.
If y’all haven’t been to a DW event, it’s a must see.:headbang:
